  I'm overdue (and was with DS too). At my doctor's office, they do a NST at your 41w appt, then schedule induction for 42w if all looks good.
  
  Of course they give you the option to schedule induction earlier than 42w if you want, but 42w is the latest they let you go. I think that's pretty standard, as there starts being increased risks past 42w.
  
  Edit to add: As far as "not making progress", dilation & effacement don't mean much. You can sit at 4-5 cm for weeks, or go from 2-10 in a day.
  
  I don't remember how much I was dilated & effaced with DS prior to labor. But when it came time, my body did exactly what it needed to, I was only in the hospital 4 hrs before he was born. No induction, went in to labor naturally at 40w6d.

  how early were you able to schedule induction?? Since he said I'd have a baby by thanksgiving I know he's planning on doing "something" by the 27th to make her come, which would be 41w4d... I just have no idea what that something in or when he plans on beginning LOL

  At my 40 week appointment we discussed induction. However, we won't be scheduling it until tomorrow. I go to the dr twice weekly now. The date of induction will be at least 41+3 but I'm going to push for 42 if all is healthy with the baby.
  
  It is very normal to go past your due date. Inductions carry risks and I personally am not enthused about scheduling one rather than waiting for the baby to decide when he is ready, assuming of course he is healthy and there is no good medical reason to induce early.
  
  I'd ask some questions about how the induction process works, what kinds of induction drugs they use, if you have a choice between cervidil and cytotec, what the monitoring is like, etc. Then go home and read about it. If you get to the point where it looks like induction is required then you'll be more educated about it and better be able to make the best decisions for you and your baby.
  
  If you are anxious to get the show on the road you could ask for a membrane sweep and try some more natural methods like sex, primrose oil, etc.

  Ditto everyone else. I had an u/s done at 40w1d to check my fluid levels. Everything looked good so we briefly talked about induction at 41w3d since they didn't want me going past 42w. I ended up going into labor on my own at 40w5d.

  I would just ask them what the game plan is for induction.   I asked my dr and she told me that if I make it to 41 weeks,  they would send me for an US to check fluids and send me for fetal monitoring to make sure he is doing ok in there.   they would schedule my induction for between 41 and 42 weeks, which is the week of Thanksgiving.     I am assuming they would schedule it early that week though since I imagine the hospital will have a skeleton crew for the holiday.

  I was 1 cm dilated, 50% effaced. He said I was on track, and he did strip my membranes "some" ... whatever that means. They got me in the books for my induction Mon night the 24th but he said I'm right on track to go before then. Feel good having some sort of game plan though! The 1 cm is a little discouraging...
