Need thoughts/opinions/ideas please! My 39 week appointment is today (I'm 39+4) at last appointment I had not made much progress at all, but baby's head was low and engaged. He said my cervix was thinning (a little bit). Yeah, he's really descriptive. I'm feeling like I may need to push a little to get some information from him; for example, an induction date if it comes to that - with Thanksgiving just around the corner I know I'd feel so much better with some sort of game plan. He did say I'd have a baby by Thanksgiving ... I'm uncomfortable, I want to be done with working, I'm not sleeping... and her movements are decreasing. Still getting kick counts but I can just tell she is completely out of room!
What are some questions I could ask to get some more information? Am I jumping the gun here? Did you guys typically have an appointment on your due date or were you still once a week after that? I am a FTM so no inductions previously, I think that's why my doctor is wanting to wait.
Re: Questions to ask at Appointment today
Of course they give you the option to schedule induction earlier than 42w if you want, but 42w is the latest they let you go. I think that's pretty standard, as there starts being increased risks past 42w.
Edit to add: As far as "not making progress", dilation & effacement don't mean much. You can sit at 4-5 cm for weeks, or go from 2-10 in a day.
I don't remember how much I was dilated & effaced with DS prior to labor. But when it came time, my body did exactly what it needed to, I was only in the hospital 4 hrs before he was born. No induction, went in to labor naturally at 40w6d.
It is very normal to go past your due date. Inductions carry risks and I personally am not enthused about scheduling one rather than waiting for the baby to decide when he is ready, assuming of course he is healthy and there is no good medical reason to induce early.
I'd ask some questions about how the induction process works, what kinds of induction drugs they use, if you have a choice between cervidil and cytotec, what the monitoring is like, etc. Then go home and read about it. If you get to the point where it looks like induction is required then you'll be more educated about it and better be able to make the best decisions for you and your baby.
If you are anxious to get the show on the road you could ask for a membrane sweep and try some more natural methods like sex, primrose oil, etc.
I would just ask them what the game plan is for induction. I asked my dr and she told me that if I make it to 41 weeks, they would send me for an US to check fluids and send me for fetal monitoring to make sure he is doing ok in there. they would schedule my induction for between 41 and 42 weeks, which is the week of Thanksgiving. I am assuming they would schedule it early that week though since I imagine the hospital will have a skeleton crew for the holiday.
