Maternity Winter Wear

Forgive me if this was already talked about...I couldn't find a thread. Does anyone have recommendations of where to get a comfortable, cheap maternity jacket/coat/shawl/something to keep me warm but that will be flexible enough to wear post-pregnancy for a while also? I only have a couple more weeks left and was trying to avoid buying anything else, but it's now 30 degrees outside and I have no sweaters, coats, or closed-toed shoes that fit! Ahhh! Oh that gives me another question for STMs...how long before your feet went back to normal size if they did at all? Should I bother buying boots a size up or just wait and deal with sandals for a while?

Re: Maternity Winter Wear

  • Just wear your coat unzipped/buttoned, that's what I've been doing! I have two maternity hoodies that'll last me in the house when I'm cold but other than that, no maternity winter gear here! Get a pair of wide or larger size flats to wear casually.  My calves don't fit in my boots now, but I'm just wearing flats until after baby comes.

  • I am just wearing my normal coats/jackets. I refuse to buy a new jacket just for another month or two. I also don't fit in my DH's so wearing his is out of question. I keep warm by using a scarf to cover my neckline.

Lol - I am a FTM but I haven't even attempted to wear my boots yet. Not because they don't fit, but because I am too lazy to bend over to zip or slide them on. So flats it is!!

  • If there is a motherhood maternity outlet near you mine has some cute jackets for pretty cheap that look like you could rock them pp.
  • I just wanted to add that I had all these visions of cute maternity tunics and sweaters with my boots and they totally don't fit around my fat calves anymore. It is so sad.

  • Check out pink blush...i bought a nice coat from there for $60. I can wear it post-pregnancy too. Make sure you get a size or two up...their coats run small! I am a total wimp so wearing a coat unbuttoned wouldnt work for me. Also I didn't really buy clothes in the summer so I wanted some cute stuff. H&M has good stuff too.

If it makes you feel any better, I had visions of wearing cute sweater dresses/tunics and leggings all third trimester, but my freakishly long torso and freakishly huge belly have conspired to make it necessary to wear actual pants with my sweater dresses because they're more like regular sweaters.

No one needs to see my thunder thighs and giant rear end in leggings if my sweater isn't gonna go past the very top of my hips. :|
Help a leggings newbie out...is the rule that the sweater has to cover your bum? Is a long cute shirt okay too? What about a tight tunic? Why is this so hard for me :(

  • Wear your current coats with a thicker scarf to cover the bump. I'm in Texas so it just got to 32 degrees, but that is so rare for us. I'm pulling out the fleece lined leggings and layering....it warms up pretty fast.

  • I got lucky and borrowed a coat from a previously pregnant friend. It's motherhood, but I've no idea what she spent, obviously. If I'm just walking the dog or something, sometimes I just grab DH's coat.

Going up a couple sizes in a thrift store coat could work, maybe?

  • I like Old Navy....their coat's aren't too much. And last time when DS was born, my boobs got huge after, and it took awhile for me to fit in my regular coat even after I had lost the baby weight. I'm in Chicago, and it gets really cold here, so I like to have a coat which will close. On the feet, mine don't get bigger, or maybe they got marginally bigger (both this time and last time). So, no help there.
  • I found some good stuff on ebay, my favorites are big cardigan sweaters that are open in the front.  Also got a few things on thredup.com.  They are all in pretty much new condition, because they were only worn for a short time!

  • You could probably get by with your regular coat undone or a sweater or something. It's -12c here and I'm just wearing a light maternity zip up hoodie. When I was pg with DD in Jan and Feb (when it was regularly -30c) I bought a cheap bomber style winter jacket from Walmart in a size too big and it worked fine- I was able to zip it until the end and it worked after until I was able to fit back into my slim fitting winter jacket.

I refuse to spend the money on something I won't get much use out of. It was negative 8 degrees yesterday and I just wore my ski coat unzipped. How about oversized sweater cardis that you can wear after the baby is born? I got this one from tommy bahama of all places (I thought that place was for warm weather?!). Anyway, it was pricey for me but very good quality and something I will be able to wear for years. It is so soft and cozy. It is VERY warm too! I'm sure you can find something similar at macys, kohls, etc. https://www.tommybahama.com/TBG/Women/New_Product_Arrivals/PRD_TW49083/Shipley+Solid+Cardigan.jsp?selectedPlpColor=TW49083_4614
  • Ditto what others have said about Old Navy - I found a cute one for about $40
  • Also check out wrap style sweaters and coats. You can wear them loosely closed around your bump now and then cinch them tighter post baby. I have gotten a few in Target's plus section and oddly enough their athletic wear section (yoga cover up tops seem to be wrap style).
  • My mom made me a reversible fleece poncho.it's really warm and keeps my belly covered.
  • I would suggest Gap. Should be able to get 50 percent off around Black Friday. What I love about their maternity clothes is that they look like their regular clothes so should be good for transitioning post baby.

As for a coat I refused to buy a new one so I have been wearing my husbands hunting coat. It is so warm that I don't care if I look like a bag of leaves. Of course I live in Wisconsin where it is exceptable to wear cameo in public.

If your husbands coat is not an option Oldnavy had one I almost considered but I'm due 12/1 so I really didn't want to spend the money for a few weeks.
  • I don't have advice on the coat because the winter coat I bought last year is a large and it still fits me. I usually buy winter coats bigger since I am wearing huge sweaters under them most of the time. But as far as comfy shoes go, I went to TJ Maxx and they have the Naturalizer brand for $20-$25 which I think is a bargain. I've been wearing this pair of shoes pretty much every day I go to work. Sometimes they match my outfit. Sometimes they don't. I don't care at this point! Lol
Married my best friend 7/2/11 - Furbaby born 7/9/11 and brought into our home 9/1/11

BFP#1:   2/2/13 ~ exact m/c date unknown but around 3/20 at 10 weeks ~ diagnosed with PMP ~ D&C on 4/5 ~ TTA for at least 1 year due to PMP ~ cleared to TTC 1/14

    BFP#2:   2/7/14 ~ m/c 2/20/14 ~ possibly due to chemical pregnancy ~ TG no D&C is needed

Surprise BFP#3:  4/4/14 ~ super duper extra happy (and nervous) about this one - EDD 12/9/14!!!

John Joseph was born on 12/12/14 at 7 lbs. 11 oz.  He is the most beautiful rainbow baby we could have wished for!

This. Hunting clothes are the warmest!
Camo is acceptable where I live too

Tights =/= pants so I think your shirt should cover your butt. :)

  • Since you mention shawls, and it sounds like your wardrobe won't necessarily call for heavy coats frequently, I'll put this out there.

It's not maternity - in fact, I bought mine just a couple of weeks before learning I was pg. But it's worked beautifully throughout my pregnancy - it's soft and yummy comfy. I love it so much that I bought a second color when they went on sale. It's pretty warm, but if you're not acclimated to temps in the 30's you'd to want to layer it, of course...

My sister sent me one of these a few weeks ago and it has been a godsend. So warm and soft, and it works perfectly for layering. I also got a used maternity coat from a friend of a friend for free--like others I often grab my husbands fleece on the weekend.

The scary swollen feet effect started this week for me--sticking with my danskos for now, but I wish I could wear boots. I don't handle the cold well, and I'm already feeling like I don't have appropriate pants/leggings for the weather. I put in a gap order for some long hopefully looser wearing loungewear that I can layer with leggings.

  • I bought a swing winter coat at LOFT at least 5 years ago and it fits nicely now (well a bit tight around the belly... But it's my regular size so what can I really expect? So if you see any swing jackets those would work! I also have one of those shawl/sweater things from ann Taylor that are usually $100 but I got it on sale for $15. Not really my style, but it's really warm!

  • It got really cold here out of the blue, too. I got a fleece zip up from Old Navy and some fake Uggs from Target and I should be good to go:

$60 for both - more than I wanted to spend, but I can't really run around in flip flops at this point. Also, the ON maternity jackets are all on sale right now.

  • I second @Slaps‌ and the goodwill idea. Any leftover maternity clothes I have from the girls are summer clothes, and I refuse to buy winter clothes for another couple of weeks. I got some long sleeved maternity shirts at Salvation Army and found a denim trench coat too. It's warm enough for Texas winters and I just button the top button and tie the sash over my belly. I'll have it to wear after the baby comes because it's not maternity.

  • I got a Betsey Johnson down coat last winter (thank you Polar Vortex) and although it only buttons right below my boobs, it has an elastic belt that I wear to keep it together while I walk into work (the bump keeps itself warm).

Sadly, I had big feet to begin with (11s over here!) and have grown into a 12, so Payless has been my go to for pregnant shoes. I got some cute boots from there for $30 and in case my feet do actually shrink back, they are roomy enough to wear wool socks with. I had to splurge online last weekend and got two long tanks and a long sweater for $30 total from Old Navy...nothing is covering my belly and I have 2 weeks left of work. I'm planning on using the tanks for nursing after LO arrives anyways.

May the force be with us all as we continue to grow and hopefully not freeze!
  • I really wouldn't spend much on shoes! Feet could go back or up a half a size! As for a coat I got a bigger one on Zuilly for cheap not maternity and should be a good transition coat after baby. I also found one coat I already had still fit. I am having LO on the 5th though so I didn't invest in too much winter stuff. I am a big fan of layering anyways. So a lot of my cute summer tanks etc look good with a cardigan and scarf. Also I am just wearing sneakers a ton. Not super fashionable but they fit!
