HELP- Which sling or wrap?

JaneShopsJaneShops member
edited November 2014 in April 2015 Moms
Working on my registry, & looking for advice on a baby sling or wrap carrier. This is during the newborn stage, & will be mostly used by me. Not sure if it matters, but I'm 5'4" with petite-normal build. Planning to switch over to a Ergo carrier once the baby gets heavier. Just not a fan of the ergo during the infant stage, even with the infant insert.

Re: HELP- Which sling or wrap?

  • FWIW, Consumer Reports does not recommend slings because they have the most injuries and deaths of any baby carriers.

Yup I'm aware. I believe the number published by US CPSC was less than 15 infant deaths over past 20 years. So will doing it properly with the baby's face above the rim, avoid chin to chest, & just being extra careful of suffocation. Also, planning to consult my pediatrician to confirm my baby is a candidate. In the hospital I work at, we educate parents of premature & low-birthweight babies. Also, after colds or respiratory problems.

Thanks for pointing it out, I feel like everyone needs to be aware of how a lot of baby products have risks

  • I voted Boba baby wrap only because it's the only one I've used! I loved mine, it was definitely a life saver with my youngest DS.

  • @threeoclock‌ The breeze is a mesh, right? Felt as comfy as the original?

@AshleighK305‌ did you get the hang of the wrapping pretty quickly?

  • Love my regular K'tan! My I wore my DS in August, September and October and never felt it was too warm. I tried a friend's Moby and thought the K'tan was much easier to get into. My DH didn't want to baby wear, but it would never have fit him. As a pp mentioned, it is sized. I actually used the K'tan way more than my ergo.

  • I voted SS because I love, love, love the Moby until it gets hot. Since I don't know how hot it gets where you live I didn't know how to vote. Also, it is stretchy which makes it harder to do things where you will be bending over like laundry or gardening. For the times that I don't want to use the moby I use a mei tai. The mei tai is nice too because you can use it on your back once the kid gets older. It is my carrier of choice for my toddlers.

  • I LOVED my K'tan. It's way faster and easier to put on than the Moby.

  • Honestly, see if you can find a local babywearers group to try out the different types.  Different things fit differently depending on your shape.  I love my moby, but some people find it overwhelming, and the Ergo was so much easier to deal with when I had my second, since it didn't require as much energy to put on.  Personally, I love my slings, but I don't feel comfortable using them until the baby can sit and/or cling to you, I just feel like its not a enough protection for a newborn like the Ergo or Moby has.
  • I have a moby but this go round I'm going to make a ring sling.
  • I loved my Moby when DD was a little squish! Then we moved to the Ergo, now we use a ring sling,

  • I'd get a ring sling, it will work for a squish and long term and will be a nice option aside from your ergo. The stretchy ones are hot and don't last as long. One that's not too expensive is a Maya.

  • I'm planning on getting a ring sling and an ergo. Contact your local natural parenting/baby store or babies r us a lot of times they have baby wearing classes (for free) so you can try on and learn about your options. Our class was great learnt how to carry infant in sling also how to breast feed while wearing baby! Good luck remember knowledge is power. Feel great about your decision mama.
  • I used a Beco Gemini with DS and I got a Baby K'Taan and a ring sling to use with the twins.

Yes, it is very easy to do! I just bought another one so that I have a different color option and practiced with my friends baby lol. It is just like I remember. The fabric is super soft and learning how to wrap them is easy. I used mine with DS quite a bit through the first 6 months or so!

  • Get a ring sling! They are easy, versatile, safe, and convenient. They can be used up to 40 pounds, generally, and come in so many colors and patterns. I like sweet emmaline on Facebook and etsy for a newborn wrap sling.
Do you nurse in the ring sling? I would love to find one I can nurse comfortably in public.
  • Anyone with experience with a BabyBjorn original style? I just bought one on clearance and was hoping it would be better than the ones I had last time.

Return it, unless you plan to use it with the scarf truck to tie around you to ensure proper hip positioning.

I had to google scarf truck! I see what you are saying - hips need to be spread wider. Oh well, it was the last one at only 15 bucks and now I know why. Thanks for the info
  • Oh lord, how can any of us walk normal if we didn't get proper hip positioning in our baby carriers back in the 70's and 80's?!? Must be a miracle...
    I definitely wasn't worn.
  • SS. I plan to get the solly baby wrap. I've heard good things about it and they are so cute!
  • I for sure want a moby and ergo this time around.

  • I life anything that's just a simple loop of fabric, no complications. I really liked my New Native but there are quite a few simple ones to choose from.
  • I want to order the K'tan and try it out with my friend's son.

  • I agree to try to test a bunch out before you buy.

I LOVE woven wraps. They're expensive, but one woven wrap can get you from newborn days long through toddlerhood. I have a Girasol that I started using when my son was about a week old and still wear him in at 2.5 years. It is so soft, comfortable, and versatile. Bonus: you can use it as a blanket to sit on or warm your baby with if you stop somewhere.

I also have a Wrapsody Bali Breeze. It cost a lot less, is equally versatile, and is much cooler in the summer. I don't find it as comfortable because the gauze fabric is a bit rough. Using it more would probably soften it up.

I had a Sakura bloom silk ring sling but never liked it as much. I felt it was more difficult to properly create the pocket and make all of the tiny adjustments to crest a secure hold than just tossing my wrap on. Also, once my son was a bit older and stronger (8 or 9 months?) he would always stand up on my hip, which would take his weight out of the pocket and lose the tension that held him securely. That's when I ditched the sling.

There's lots of K'tan love, but I hated it and returned it. My son was only 7.5 lbs, but still drooped far below my waist in it because the fabric stretched so much. The saleswoman when I returned it (specialty babywearing store) told me I needed an extra small, which was two sizes below what K'tan's size chart recommended.

  • I have a local consignment store that has a babywearing class where they let you try out different carriers and see what kind you like.  Totally worth looking around to see if there is one near you.  I found it extremely helpful.
