Solids vs. Formula

So my DD is 7 months now and weighs 16lbs.  At our 6 month checkup 2 weeks ago our pediatrician recommended no more than 24oz of Formula a day, especially if we give our DD a yogurt every day (which we do).  The doc said that more than 24oz of much formula combined with other dairy like Yogurt is too much dairy and can lead to Anemia.  So now our DD eats 3 meals a day (cereal for breakfast, homemade soup for lunch, baby yogurt mid-afternoon, and soup again or Avocado for dinner, and has only about 20oz of formula a day.  From reading other posts on here, 20oz now seems like too little??? It seems like everyone else is still completely focused on BM/Formula and not as much on solids.  I'm confused.  DD used to drink about 27oz of BM/Formula a day before solids.

Re: Solids vs. Formula

  • 20oz does seem like a small amount. My pedi recommended we stay between 24 and 36oz a day. We also do BLW, so she does get solids as well.

  • We EBF so I can't give you numbers but my LO hates solids so milk still makes up about 90% of her diet.
  • My pedi said some babies eat as little as 18 oz a day and as much as 40 oz! I think 18 oz seems low but every baby is different! My dd gets formula and BM so I'm not exactly sure how much she gets; but she gets 15-18 oz bottles BM and formula plus nursing 3 times, so she is probably taking in around 20-30 oz per day.

Formula/breastmilk is supposed to be the primary source of nutrition right now so keeping her pre solid oz plus solids would seem ok to me.
  • That's only true once they are switched to milk (from what I understand) because there is iron in formula so it's not an issue for anemia. Dd gets 30oz and 12 meals a day

  • I'm glad you asked this! I am doing BLW and was only giving her breakfast and lunch for the last month (she's a little over 7 months) and just recently she's started drinking less formula. She does well when she eats solids though.. She used to have four bottles a day between 6-8 ounces each and now she's drinking 3 bottles of 8 ounces. I am probably going to add a snack or dinner..
I just keep telling myself that every baby is different and if she was hungry she'd let me know!

    I meant 1-2 meals, not 12 :)

  • LO eats 35-40oz/ day. We're doing a mix of purées and BLW. 24oz sounds really low, especially since formula/breast milk is their primary source of nutrition. I say feed her when she's hungry.

    ummmm....this^^^.

There is iron in formula! If you did anything I would cut out the yogurt and do baby cereal or oatmeal (which is supplemented with iron).

I have definitely heard of WCM inhibiting iron absorption, but I have never heard of formula playing a role in that.

  • We do 20 oz formula but I also nurse, no clue how much he is getting there. He eats food 2-3 times a day. Our pedi just asks BF/FF and if he's getting solids, otherwise he is big and the Dr. doesn't seem to have an opinion on what he should be getting (unless I ask, of course). I'm a fan.
  • Chase gets 3 meals per day and about 30-32oz of formula a day. By meal I mean 2oz fruit or veggie mixed with oatmeal in the am and just plain in the afternoon and pm. I really don't think the recommendations are a rule more like a guideline? I think you'll be able to tell by your baby how satisfied they are.
  • For our 6.5 mth old, we try to do arnd 25-30 oz formula each day.
Of all the formula rounds, 2 also contain rice cereal mixed in.
She gets 1 round of solid for lunch and then one for dinner.
  • O only eats 24oz per day, and does purees/BLW twice a day (about 2oz or so each feed).   She won't eat any more than that, except maybe a MumMum.
  • The main reason for not switching to cow's milk (as a substitute for formula or BM) before a year is higher risk of anemia, but as others have said, there's iron in formula, so I'm not sure where your doc is coming from.
BM/formula should be the baby's primary source of nutrition until a year. Your LO is getting a lot of solids; honestly I'd cut back on them a bit and up the formula.
