Infection and fever during/after labor

after looking over the second chances thread, I noticed a few of you, like myself, had a fever and infection. Just curious to hear details.

I was in labor for 15 hours followed by 3 hours of pushing. I really wish I knew why that happened. LO had to stay in the NICU for the next 6 days.

Re: Infection and fever during/after labor

  • I was in labor for about 12 hours followed by about 2.5 hours of practice then real pushing. Because I had a fever of 100.4 they had to keep LO for 36 hours instead of 24 to be on the safe side. She was fine and stayed with us the entire time. It was actually nice having to stay there a second night so we could get additional help/advice.

  • I was in labor for 30 hrs and pushed for 1.5. Finally caved and got the epidural after 24 hrs. Right after delivery I had a fever and the nurse figured I would start antibiotics but the doc said just to watch it. Sure enough after getting some food in me and resting my fever broke in a couple hours. No one was concerned about an infection for me or LO after that!
  • I was in labor for 30 hours. Pushed for an hour and a half. My water had been broken for 14 hours before I was fully dialated. They noticed I was running a fever right before I started pushing, so they quickly ran some antibiotics through my IV. The MW said my amniotic fluid had an odor to it, so she took a sample. My fever broke almost instantly when the baby came out. They said it was more than likely due to having a long labor. Nothing more was said about it and LO never had to go to NICU. I had a one week post partum exam due to high BP and at that time the MW told me that my amniotic fluid tested positive for staph, but that antibiotics took care of it. She said had my labor lasted another hour, it was likely that baby would have been affected and I would have been facing a c-section.
  • I started a fever after 12 hours of labor, they let me go 25 hours after water broke and still not 10 cm dilated. I ended up with a c section because of the fever getting worse, baby heart decelerating and still not dilated.

I was already on antibiotics with the gbs, and I don't remember getting more afterwards. Fever went down after she got out.

  • I had a slow leak, so I am still unsure how long my water had been broken for. That is likely the culprit of whatever infection I got. I had called the on call doc at 10pm and was told to wait it out until contractions started or it was obvious my water had broken. We ended up just going to the hospital at 7am even though neither of those things happened. They confirmed it was my water, but I did not deliver until 7:43pm. Sometime in the afternoon I became uncontrollably cold and could not stop shivering. I had a fever of 103. They let me hold my daughter after birth for awhile and I'm so thankful for that, but they did end up taking her to the NICU for some tests shortly after. Luckily, she was fine and didn't end up getting whatever I did. I was on IV antibiotics every 4 hours for the 2 days I was in the hospital but didn't have to stay any longer than normal.

My water broke before my contractions started, and the nurse said that was likely why I had a fever after delivery. I delivered just over 11 hours after my water breaking, so it wasn't a terribly long time, but it must have been long enough. I had antibiotics for GBS, and the fever went down several hours later, so nothing was said or done for me or DD about it.

  • @Jen9608‌ I had the uncontrollable shivers as well!

Me too! They said it was part of labor for some women. But I couldn't stop for hours after my c section.

  • With DS1 my water had started leaking 2days before my induction so almost none was left. Baby was healthy but I spiked a fever and both of us got antibiotics. Mine were so strong I wound up getting intestinal infections as my flora was wiped out. I battled with that issue on and off for 3 years!

  • I was gsb as well but my water didn't break until I was at the hospital with fast contractions. I spiked a fever very fast and had the shivers. Baby's heartbeat was dangerously fluctuating so I was on the verge of a c-section, forceps, or vacuum if I didn't get her out fast. From when contractions lightly started at home to delivery was 10-11 hrs (6 hrs after I checked in at the hospital). It was not a long labor at all like most of you experienced so I don't know what happened. Luckily dd was fine and my fever broke right after delivery.
