Middle of the night awake periods

when my lo wakes up in the motn it takes between 1 and 2.5 hrs to get him back to sleep. Does anyone else have this issue? We keep the lights off and usually just feed, change and reseaddle before putting him back to sleep but it just takes so long to get him to settle back down. We are also having trouble putting him to sleep without either nursing or having a bottle even if he just ate. This is making naps and bedtime a real challenge. Any advice? TIA

  • You say we. Is your SO and you putting lo to bed? I find if my DH comes in the room while I am putting DD to sleep she smiles and wakes up more. Have you tried a pacifier to help get him to sleep for naps?

  • If I have to change her (sometimes I don't if it's just pee) I'll make sure I do that first or do it between sides when nursing. I also re-swaddle before offering the second side that way she's all ready to go down without moving her around too much. He might also just like to suck, have you tried a pacifier? It took a while for mine to take one but now she likes it and puts her right to sleep.
  • This has been a total pita... She wakes up and VERY RARELY goes straight back to sleep at night.. Takes me 2 1/2-3 his of rocking and nursing to get her back down.
  • He's not the biggest fan of the pacifier. Every once in a while he will take it but usually only for a couple of minutes before spitting it out. I find that he will fall asleep in my arms nursing and once I put him down in his RNP he wakes up within a couple of minutes then we start all over again. It either takes me 3 or 4 times of doing this or DH has to either give him a little bit of a bottle or comfort him to go to sleep and then he will go down. Idk if maybe he realizes he can't smell me anymore once I put him down?

You just gave me an idea I'm gunna try tonight. Maybe that's her problem: she can't smell me. I think I'll try placing one of my shirts on the edge of the bassinet.
  • It takes me an hour or more, but it's because she breastfeeds for like 50 minutes. I also change and reswaddle a few minutes before she's done so she can go right to sleep. If she fusses when I put her in rock and play I just lay in bed and rock it for a few minutes and she usually falls asleep.
  • I only undo the bottom of DDs swaddle, change her, redo the bottom of her swaddle, then feed her. She is usually still awake when I put her back down. I then turn on her sound machine and her mobile. It has Lights and plays music. She goes back to sleep within 5 minutes. So everything takes about 30 minutes.
  • My LO is up every 2 hours to eat but goes right back to sleep sometimes before he is done eating
  • It seemed to really speed up the MOTN feeding with DS once we stopped changing him and started keeping him swaddled the whole time. He used to take an hour, now he goes back down after 15 mins. During the day he is the slowest eater ever, but he gets down to business at night now.
