Glass bottles and bottle warmer...

I have been sending glass bottles to daycare where they use a bottle warmer to warm up DS's bottles.  Yesterday, one broke all around the bottom of the cylindrical part (so the entire bottom came off as one piece and all the BM in it was lost :(( ).  I don't use a bottle warmer at home so have no experience with them.  I'm not sure if it was the bottle warmer or a defect in the glass that would have caused the bottle to eventually break.  Has any one had experience with glass bottles in bottle warmers? Are you not supposed to use them with glass? Has anyone had a glass bottle break?

  • I think it would be a defect in the bottle. We haven't had a bottle break yet, but I do fear it. Sorry this happened to you!
  • I'm thinking defect. How are glass bottle mamas warming them? I was leaving them in warm water to heat up and got a bad burn a few weeks ago, so now I'm afraid!

  • I'm thinking defect as well, since our DC provider has warmed up other glass bottles I've sent.  I've always just warmed up bottles by setting them in some warm water. Does anyone with glass bottles use a bottle warmer?

    Thanks everyone!

  • We use glass bottles (avent naturals) and a bottle warmer at home (kiinde) and we have had no problems.

Is the daycare putting an ice cold bottle into already warm water? I always make sure to "temper" my bottles at home but I know some daycares keep a crockpot full of warm water going in order to make multiple bottles simultaneously. Even my nice Pyrex has cracked under similar circumstances...

My daycare won't take glass (in part because of this) so I use plastic when he goes to daycare (they just give it to him cold and I hand wash them in tepid water at home).
  • I've had this happen once and it was when I put an ice cold bottle into warm water in a bottle warmer. LO was demanding more to eat so I tried to heat up a few extra ounces in a flash. The glass broke and I also lost the Bmilk :(. I'm guessing this is what happened at your DC as well.
  • Thanks for all the replies!  I think she has the warmer on all or most of the time.  I'm going to talk to her about tempering the bottles, just to be sure.

@RedMar I feel your pain on the lost BM.
