DIY Maternity Jeans

Has anyone tried to make their own? I did a search and didn't see anything on the boards. I found this tutorial online. It looks fairly easy for someone with just a bit of sewing knowledge. Just wondering how it worked out in real life. Also wondering if you used jeans with stretch in them and how that worked. I don't want to end up with a huge pinterest fail. I have a couple pairs of jeggings that I love but wouldn't mind parting with. They were just $18 at Sam's club. I haven't found any jeggings or leggings that fit right. Jeans are even worse. They are all so huge in the crotch and thighs. I'm plus size so I'm guessing that's why. It's just silly to wear pants that look like you've taken a dump in them. Suggestions on cheap but effective belly bands? https://icandy-handmade.com/2011/12/tutorial-maternity-jeans-conversion.html

Re: DIY Maternity Jeans

  • I was considering making my own too and was definitely considering making them from a $12 pair of walmart jeggings, since i am between sizes rn. Also plus size but was not going to waste $16 bucks a pop on a belly band. I think it would be better to buy one for reference and other use and then got get some polyester from a fabric store. That was my plan at least. Probably way cheeper to get a yard of polyester than it is to buy 1 belly band.

  • Good idea. I just looked then up as well. $16 a pop is a bit steep when you add the $20 jeggings. But...maybe a little extra research will help me find a cheaper alternative for the belly band.

  • That's what I was thinking @Audrey1787‌. The tutorial above seems easy enough but it's that damn band. You need something SUPER stretchy like your typical belly band. I'm afraid the knock offs would be too weak.

  • I cut the top off of a pair of uniform pants and sewed a belly band to them.
