AW: Surgery Over **Update from Post-op in OP**

edited November 2014 in Trouble TTC
Hey Ladies, I'm officially out home recovering from my hysteroscopy/laproscopy.  Due to some kind of craziness at the surgery center I didn't actually get to see the doctor afterwards.  He talked to DH so I got some information, but of course not everything I'd want to know.  Luckily, my post-op is Monday so I don't have to wait too long to get more answers.

Here is what I know so far, that has me not feeling too optimistic.  The doc told DH they took "A LOT" of polyps out of my uterus.  I have no idea how many is a lot, but it sounded like a somewhat alarming number, but they got them all.  The paratubal cyst on my left tube was removed without any problems since they just happened to be in there.  Now, for the more confusing news.  The doc couldn't get my right tube to flow smoothly.  He told DH it was "fighting him" meaning I guess it was spasming so they they couldn't really tell if it was still blocked or not.  He didn't mention endo or scar tissue or anything like that at all to DH so I have no idea what could still be causing a blockage.

Here's the part that really got to me - he told DH that IVF may be our best option.  For those of you who saw my WTFW you know that my usual RE was not the one who did the surgery.  So this guy who doesn't know me or my husband decides to tell him in a waiting room that we may need IVF??  That more than a little ticks me off.  When DH pressed and asked if that meant that was the only option we'd have he said, "no, not at all."  So, WTF.  I'm trying to not to think about too much until I get the full story on Monday, and to just focus on healing for the next few days.

Other than that, I, definitely sore, but overall doing ok.  Thanks for the positive vibes you've all been sending.  The definitely help.  For those interested, I'll update the post on Monday.

**UPDATE**
Sorry I've been MIA the last few days.  I've been a bit of a recluse since the surgery and post-op.  Today is my first day back at work, and let me tell you that real clothes, particularly the dress ones I have to wear to work, stink!  I miss my sweats...

Now, onto the important stuff.  So I had my post-op Monday and I can officially say I miss my RE, but she's not back until January.  This new one didn't seem to remember that she was in the room during my surgery, and also didn't appear to even look at my chart until I was sitting in front of her.  I was not happy.  Anyway, the removed a lot of benign polyps from my uterus, so that should be squeaky clean now.  The seemingly harmless paratubal cyst that I was told was just hanging out on my left tube was apparently not so harmless.  As the doc put it, it was "really impressive."  Apparently, even though my left tube appeared clear during the HSG the cyst was sort of wrapped around the entrance to the tube, rendering it somewhat useless.  On the right side there was a small blockage at the tube opening that was removed, but they still couldn't get the tube to spill.  It would fill, but not spill.  There was no sign of endo or scarring so they don't really know why (other than it possibly spasming).  The doc did say our best chances numbers wise would be IVF, which is pretty much true for anyone, but that it's worth trying some Clomid cycles first since we are 100% OOP.

So, that's what we'll be doing.  I'm going to finish the pack of BCPs I have now (about a week and half before the off week) to give my body some time to heal, but hopefully we'll finally be doing our first medicated cycle in December.  The one ray of light during all this madness is some potential good news insurance wise.  It turns out that the new job DH is starting next week that comes with a pretty big initial paycut may actually be a blessing because if I can get on his insurance it provides some IF treatment converage (including IVF)!  So, fingers crossed that all works out.

So, that's all the news thats fit to print on me.  I'm still a little sore, not really feeling like myself yet, but hopefully in a few more days that'll pass.  Sorry this was so long.  Here's some early morning wine for those who made it! :)image

Re: AW: Surgery Over **Update from Post-op in OP**

  • I am glad your surgery is over! Take the weekend to recuperate and recover! I can't wait to hear how it goes on Monday.

I don't really have any experience with the surgery side of things, but I would wait to talk to your RE before psyching yourself out. Will the post-op be with your regular RE? I am sure some other ladies will be able to give more helpful feedback, but it seems good that they could at least clear out the polyps and cyst.

What the RE said to YH is infuriating. He has no right to give you any sort of unsolicited advice or opinions. What a douche. Again, see what your doctor has to say. It sounds like this guy needs to get his ego in check!

  • Hopefully the news isn't as bad as you think. It would rub me the wrong way if somebody who isn't too familiar with your history suggesting going straight to IVF but then back tracking and saying that's not your ONLY option. I'm sure your post-op will clear some things up.

I hope you're feeling alright and recovery is quick :)

She had to go on maternity leave a few weeks earlier than expected and won't be back until January.  Luckily my post-op isn't with the guy who talked to DH after surgery.  It's with yet a thurd doctor who was also in the surgery, but I haven't met yet.  She's the founder of the practice though so hopefully it'll go well.

    Thanks to you and @LindseyM2012!

  • I'm so glad you're recovering well!

MH recorded the post-op quick conversation with the RE who did my lap, so I could listen to it myself when feeling better. :) Guys can be terrible translators of medical news!

If it makes you feel better - our RE also said after lap that he's not as hopeful about IUI, but he's still having us do several because it's worth a try. Of course IVF will give much better chances, but hopefully when you get to meet your RE on Monday you'll hear that IUI still gives you guys a fighting chance! And definitely say what the surgeon said to YH - hopefully your RE will give him an earful about that.

  • I'm glad that you made it through the surgery okay! I would be frustrated too, especially with the obvious lack of tact by the doctor afterwards, but hopefully you get good news on Monday. I would think its a good thing that they were able to successfully remove all of the polyps! I hope you get lots of rest over the weekend.
