milk protein allergy

My LO had a black tarry stool this am and at her sitter's, so I called the pediatrician.

There was trace amounts of blood. He feels like it is a milk protein allergy (I recently started drinking milk again, bc he suggested cutting down on dairy when her belly was gassy early on and had been doing much better) did some labs and is referring us to a GI specialist to be sure.

I am to cut dairy from my diet :-?? And see how that goes until we get in at the specialist.

My question is does anyone know much about this? I can't find much on Google
Also, should I (would you) nurse her this eve still or give her freezer milk from before I started drinking milk again

Re: milk protein allergy

  • Check out the MSPI (Milk/Soy Protein Intolerant) check-in archive (not sure if anyone is still posting it here) at mspimoms.blogspot.com. You should find a lot of helpful info.
I would continue nursing unless her reaction is very severe, in which case you could give her a little break with the dairy-free freezer milk. Make sure you pump to keep your supply up.
GL! There's lots of knowledgeable mamas on this board and the Food Allergy board.

  • Sorry to hear you might be dealing with MPI.  Both my boys had it.  It's not fun at first, but you get used to it pretty quickly & learn some good substitutes that you enjoy.

I agree with the advice above.  Also check out www.godairyfree.org for tips on how to read labels & avoid dairy in places you'd never expect it.
