CD moms-Super heavy wetter and the impact of solids...advice would be great!

Hi guys, I often just lurk and lately haven't even been on the bump! We have been doing solids for about 2 full weeks and he has made the poop transition.

First question: He is a super heavy soaker and has been having leaks DAILY- I change him about every 2.5 hours- I just started doubling up the inserts (we use BG). Does anyone else double up during the day?? At night we have to use a double diaper situation, its just crazy! He is either super dry or soaking- I think he has a big bladder and just lets it go all at once.

Second question: HOW do you deal with "solids" poop?? The sprayer gets everywhere and it's more "moussey"-- I have read people use a spatula? The other night I dipped it in the toilet and kinda scrubbed (do not intend for that to be typical). He goes to daycare, so I get the diapers a day or 2 old as well. I am trying out the bummis insert, but the poop gets all in the back elastic, so it has not yet been super successful.

I want to love CDing but man, sometimes I work too damn hard at it.

Any advice, suggestions?

EDIT- oops- this was for the CD board......oh well, I will just keep it here!

  • I made a homemade spray pal to help keep the poopy water from spraying places. There are some different tutorials online if you google them. I still don't feel like I have the art of poop spraying down though.

  • Loading the player...
  • I've got a spatula.

I sort of fold it over, hold the edges, and scrape it into the water.  The spatula then gets rinsed when the toilet flushes, wiped with TP if needed.  It's got a bucket to sit in and I bleach them at least once a week.

  • @LalaMama81‌ how often should I be changing typically? The doubling up let us go 3 hrs! It's just frustrating to run errands or he falls asleep and then is drenched! Also- so much laundry! Good to know about the knives... Do you typically scrape at time of incident or before throwing into wash?

  • We usually try to plop/scrape off most of it in the toilet. This may be gross, but if there are still some smears or chunks we use the garden hose with a sprayer outside and spray it into the grass. Gross right? But it's effective and it's sort of like composting :D
  • He is either dry or leaks- that's the issue! So, I think he goes more than one can hold. I definitely need to be changing him more though. I thought 3 hrs was a realistic expectation!

  • I use bg4.0 and a couple Alva. It's not the insert since they are soaked and I strip bimonthly. Could be but the fit, but I am gonna up my changes tomorrow. Thx!

  • Well since I have been cd'ing for 6 months... That is only 3x :) oh gosh I can't imagine another cover... He is already a big bottom heavy boy and his 12 mo pants barely fit over the diapers!! Thanks for the tips!

  • What kind of cloth diaper detergent do you use?  Some of them can cause build up in the diapers and then that causes leaking.  You would need to strip them (I have done it by boiling in hot water) to get out all of the soap.  We use Bum Genius one size and they actually don't leak for us even overnight.

We typically change right before we leave the house and then sometimes while we are out depending on how long.  In disposable people can go longer between diaper changes because it absorbs, but in cloth diapers I change way more often throughout the day.  I check it to see if its wet, but often it can be every 1-2 hours.

As for poop I find it generally scrapes off into the toilet easily.  I do it before I put them into the wet bag.  I have never used a diaper sprayer.  When my first daughter was 2 and her poops were massive and I didn't feel like dealing with the mess I actually used diaper liners until she was potty trained (just pull off and put into the garbage like a wipe).
  • Sigh. Changed before nap, 40 min later I pick him up to change and he is drenched (belly sleeper). Double stuffing from here on out...

  • You might just need better inserts. Microfiber is kind of sucky.

  • A little late, but I thought I'd add my 2 cents. I cloth diapered with DS1 and discovered that about this age we started having issues with absorbency. After a ton of trial and error I found that the Green Mountain Diaper prefolds trifolded as my insert works the best. Especially with Bumgenius because you can use the same size prefold that they would wear normally so that its got lots of absorbency.
Another idea would be to get a wool cover for naps and nighttime. That really helped stop our leaking problems. If you can knit or crochet there are patterns to make your own since they are kinda pricey to buy.

As for poop, I always swore I wouldn't swish diapers in the toilet. But DS1 poops never really got solid enough to just plop into the toilet. It was so much easier ans cleaner than a sprayer IMO. I just took the pail into the bathroom and swished until all the poop was in the toilet (I usually had to flush a few times before it was clean), and then just toss it into the pail. No poopy water all over the bathroom, and not scrapers to keep track of and clean.

Hope this helps and makes sense. Good Luck!

  • You might just want to try different material inserts and different brand inserts. We use moraki hemp AIOs and then i lay a BG thin fleece liner on top just to catch the poop. Then all I usually have to rinse is the fleece. (Sometimes it misses but not usually.) and I have a diape dawgs collar for my diaper sprayer. It's awesome check out the videos on their website. BGs didn't work for us cause my guy pees a lot too. Not fast, just a lot. Our best bottom hemp doublers seem to be the best for us to add to the already multiple layers of hemp in the AIO for nighttime. I just ordered some WAHM hybrids to try for overnight cause I still have to change MOTN. Good luck!
