I know a lot of you don't need big gifts for LO but this is our first and I'm just curious what others plan to do since Christmas and Birthdays are just a few months apart. We are suckers and will probably go bananas AND over-budget.

No "big" gifts. LO already has too many toys.

We'll splurge on one but still get another fun/fancy/expensive toy for the other
I'll treat his birthday as if it were any other time of the year, other than just 4w after Christmas. I won't let "he just got XYZ for Christmas" make his bday presents any different. He won't necessarily get a big gift every Xmas/bday, but neither will DS1 with a June bday.
He'll get enough stuff from family members, so I don't plan to get him much of anything. For Xmas, whatever larger gift we get for his sister (since she will actually care), he can play with, of course. We're thinking train set. Probably no big birthday gift this year. DD's favorite 1st birthday gift was a $1 light up ball from Target. In the future, though, we'll do separate Xmas and birthday gifts. I feel like 1 month apart isn't too close for 2 gifts.
BFP #1 9/2010 (lost our baby at 21 weeks)
BFP #2 8/2011 (ectopic pregnancy)
BFP #3 10/2011 (chemical pregnancy)
BFP #4 12/2011 (Abigail born 8/15/12)
BFP #5 5/2013 (Griffin born 1/23/14 with heart defects, now repaired!)
We will do 1 big present for Christmas and her birthday. But since they are almost 2 months apart, I don't feel like we are combining the holidays. But in the future we will implant the 1 toy in, 1 toy out rule.
We haven't gotten that far, but seeing as DSD's bday is a week before Christmas, we don't actually consider babyGs birthday all that close (2 1/2 months after).
We don't have the space for big gifts, which sucks because babyG loves his play things at dc (garden gate, front door with mailbox etc).
We'll have to see... We've been dreaming of an addition for a couple years, maybe it's time to talk to the bank...

Well considering that DH just had to give him the activity car toy (not riding)I bought for Christmas over the weekend I guess I'm not sure! Because of DD we need something good from Santa. He'll probably get a riding toy for birthday.
I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!
I don't give my kids birthday gifts. It's always the deal that they either get a present or a party. I really go all out for their parties with lots of friends, food, and activities, so it's always been party, but I imagine when they're teenagers they'll prefer a present!
Glad to see we're not too far off from the general consensus on toy ideas. Both our families are pretty limited on cash so any big gifts come from us. Grandparents and Aunts and Uncles will probably do clothes/books etc which will be nice.
We do a big gift plus smaller gifts for each. DS' s birthday is actually Christmas day and he still gets two big gifts. We wait for his party the weekend after Christmas to give him his birthday presents. DD's birthday 2/28 seems very far away from Christmas.
