I am returning to work in 3 weeks. I work 3 12 hour night shifts per week and DD will be with my SIL during the day, so that's a long time away from baby. Two nights agp I had DH start feeding her her bedtime feeding to make sure she'll take it well from a bottle before he has her alone. He is using paced feeding with a slow flow nipple. The first night I gave him 3 oz to start with, but she still wanted to nurse afterward so last night we started with 4 oz. She was content after 3 oz, but then after 30min or so she started cuing again so I gave her the other oz and she was content for a while then wanted to nurse. Could she really need this much or is the 3 oz enough she is just used to nursing to sleep? I know there is no way any of you can really know the answer, I'm just looking for input or suggestions. If it is that she just wants to nurse to sleep, how do I wean her from that so DH will be able to put her to sleep on the nights that I work? Plus, I am worried I'll never be able to pump as much as she will need. I am going to order some fenugreek and mother's milk tea to try to help and I will start eating oatmeal every day. Any input or tips anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated.
TIA
Re: Feeding pumped milk
You will want to pump at least 3, but best would be 4 times during your twelve hour work shift. You will get much more milk pumping without nursing baby fulltime than you will pumping for supplement. An extra bonus is that many women find motn pumping to yield extra ounces. Depending on how long you sleep during the day after a shift, you may want to wake and pump once or better, nurse baby if she's at your house, to maintain your daytime supply for when you're with baby, but you want to balance that with getting enough rest because that too is important to supply.
Also, work with your caregivers to ensure they aren't feeding baby too soon after you've nursed or too close to when you will be able to nurse up in returning home/waking up. It's a lot of trial and error figuring out what works best. I wouldn't worry about trying to boost your supply just yet, unless you've had previous indicators of low supply.
Sorry, that was a lot of information, hope it made sense! I've not had a baby while working night, but did work them for 3 years.
