DH at Anatomy Scan?

Hi ladies! I'm a FTM, and I was wondering, should DH be at the anatomy scan? I have it scheduled on Dec. 15, and the office said that family members will only be permitted to join towards the end. He has been able to see 4 of my US so far (including one yesterday), and we are thinking of going to a private place for a 4D place to find out the sex sooner. I just wasn't sure if he should try and take the time off if he will only be able to join me towards the last few minutes. For STM, did DH come to your scan? Are you glad he did?

Re: DH at Anatomy Scan?

  • DH went to the anatomy scan. He wanted to be there in case anything ended up being wrong, so he could support me. We had already found out the sex of our baby, but they confirmed he was still a healthy boy. DH will be taking off for this anatomy scan as well. He loves being able to see baby and make sure he or she is okay. It's really up to you guys though!

  • I think your significant other should be at all major appts. that they are able to make. I hate going alone. A/S is a big one. They are important and tell you if your LO is healthy. I'd make sure he was there.

  • DH doesn't go to all my appointments but he makes sure he's there for the important ones including the anatomy scan. They allow a family member in with you the whole time though here. The anatomy scan for our DD was probably 40 minutes. He loved the experience!

  • DH is planning to be there. He didn't go to the first dating scan because he was kinda meh about it, but ended up going to a follow-up u/s a week later due to a scare so he could be there to support me with bad news (we were told it was likely I would miscarry before that scan). After he saw that scan, he said he definitely wants to be at all other u/s appts.
Maybe check if that rule includes your partner? My office will let DH be anywhere I am, but advised extras sometime come to appts and those are limited. If it weren't automatically allowed at my office, I think I would insist...
  • I would have him go, just in case anything troubling is found. If the baby (forbid) has anything abnormal, the doctor will be giving you a lot of information and options. He should also be there for that.
  • Yes, he will be there. He enjoys seeing the baby as much as I do. Of all the ultrasounds, I think the anatomy scan is the 'big one', so I want him there with me. If it was an issue with not being able to get time off work, I wouldn't hold it against him though. Especially if you're going to do a 3D 4D beforehand anyway.
  • Absolutely! They will be checking each of your baby's major systems for abnormalities. Can't imagine my husband not being there for that.

  • It's the most important scan, so yes.
  • @Smilz4782 I was surprised when I found that out too, but it's possible misunderstood?

Thanks for your input so far ladies! I was concerned about being alone if they found anything wrong. I'll definitely pressure him to take the time of work ;)

  • Yes dh will be at the anatomy scan.  If anything is wrong or if there is information that they are telling me, I want him to hear it too and be there for support.

  • @Smilz4782 they said kids are not permitted in the room and family members will be allowed at the end of the scan, but I hope everyone is right, and they mean other family members, lol. The more I thought of it, the more I realized I would want him there even if they have a stupid policy and he can only be in towards the end. If God forbid something is not right, I'd rather him be in the waiting room than at work!

The last few minutes? Seems odd. My DH was with me last time for the A/S the whole scan and will be again for this one (to hold DD as well).

I'm wondering if they meant spectator family. Like MIL, mom, sister, other siblings. I know lots of people ask about who they can have in the room. I would throw down if they tried to tell me DH couldn't be there!

ETA: Derp. You just said this above! I need to read the whole thread before responding.

  • Yes my husband has been to each. They let your spouse in with you then like a grandma at the end.
  • That's the most important, serious appointment in a pregnancy. It's also a good way for DH to connect to the baby.

I cant imagine the office including the father as "family members". Some people think of the scan as a social visit to only find out the sex, and that is probably their way of cutting down on onlookers during the time they really need to concentrate.

  • H was at both my boys' anatomy scans and will be at this one. It's the "big one" and we want to both be there for any information we get. It's also likely the last peek at the baby until he/she is born!

  • My husband goes to every appt and stays with me the whole time except when I pee in a cup. I can't imagine them telling me he could only come at the end, he'd be pissed.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • DH goes to all major appointments and DD (age 2) goes to every appointment so far. My OB office is very open about the fact babies are their business so your children are welcome. Hubby would be super offended if he was ever told he could only be there the last few moments. I can't imagine they meant to include husbands.
  • My husband went and was able to be in there for the entire scan. I think by family members, they mean grandparents, other children, etc, to find out the sex. The anatomy scan is SO MUCH MORE than just finding out the sex, though.

  • DH also goes to every one of my apts with me. It was never a discussion, that's just the way we started doing it. I was very thankful we did that for my last pregnancy, where we discovered a missed miscarriage at my second apt.

I absolutely would not bring children or other people. I'm not a pessimist, but I do recognize how fragile pregnancies can be.

  • @shmeell25‌ - There is not a snowflake's chance in hell that I would take DD to the a/s. She will be 3 in January and I know she would not have any part of being calm even with all the tricks in the world to try to occupy. She explores way too much for that. She will stay with my neighbor. Not to mention a twin anatomy scan would take twice as long for me this time!

  • They don't allow anyone in the room for scans here. They do their thing and bring the dad in at the very end and then do a run through of everything they found... They told me it's because the room is too small to have extra bodies in while they are trying to do their initial job. It was quite awkward for me to just lay there looking at the ceiling while the US tech was looking at her screen and I couldn't see anything. Although, it was kind of nice that she waited to bring my hubby in and show us what she looked at after she had a few minutes to make sure she was seeing everything correctly.

@GFJ48- I scheduled our level II with a pediatric cardiologist today.  I know DS's thing was a 1 in a billion fluke...but I almost cried scheduling it.  It brought back so many memories and thoughts....

Even if the possibility is rare...it's too close for you to rule it out.  I know how you feel.

  • @mrsrad12 That sucks! I've been in the room before for previous US (for medical issues,) and it wasn't too small...much larger than the room at my OB's office. DH is coming now, I hope I don't have to pull the crazy hormonal pregnant lady card to get him in with me.

  • it is the only one that he has ( or will) go(ne) to for all 3. I think it is important for him to be able to see the babies. And God forbid if something was wrong I'd want him there for support.

He actually wasn't at my m/c ultrasound at 9.5 weeks when I was bleeding because he was watching our girls, but I wish he would have been, I'm thankful my midwife came with me and let me cry on her shoulder

  • Honestly, the first appointment and the anatomy scan are the most important appointments for him to be at. You will want to share your joy with him once you find out if it's pink or blue. I would just have him go to this appointment with you and forego the others if he has to miss work.

I'm having this done in December and I'm a nervous wreck. Panorama was all clear but nt was 3. They ruled out trisomys because of DNA test but they said heart issue is their only concern.
Honestly, they can fix almost any heart condition. After spending a week in the Nicu, we were thankful for only a heart condition. It doesn't make you stop worrying though.
