Speaking of doctors, is this normal?

I mentioned it on one thread here, but I had food poisoning over the weekend. I vomited pretty much nonstop for six hours o/n Saturday morning. It eventually stopped, and I'm more or less okay now, but there's one thing that I can't seem to let go: I called my OB's answering service during this time to ask what I should do and they never got back to me! After waiting (and vomiting and vomiting) a couple of hours, I called my regular PCP and they got back to me pretty quickly, and all was fine. But I'm a bit alarmed that the OB never called me back at all.

Is that normal? Is it just because it wasn't necessarily pregnancy related? Should I be disturbed by this? Thanks for any input.

I'd address it with the doc at your next appointment. I haven't had to call my midwives after hours, but if I did call I would expect the courtesy of a phone call back.

I have to call in a lot and they always call back within a half hour. It's totally not acceptable not to call back.

No, I don't think that's normal or okay. I would definitely mention it to your doctor at your next appointment.

I've had to call the on-call doctor a few times. When I call, it says to leave a detailed message and if you don't hear back from someone within 15 minutes but that's never happened - someone always calls me.

I agree with pp - my OBs protocol is to have an on call doc always calls me back within 1 hour (usually it's like 15 mins at max). I'd definitely bring it up and see what they say. Maybe you have the wrong number? I'd definitely get to the bottom of it!

Not sure how big your office is, but I'd definitely expect a call back. My OB's office is rather large and the on all dr is always at the hospital and calls back pretty quick.

I'd definitely mention it at your next appt. When I was preg with my boys my OB was my PCP. He took care of every problem I had the entire pregnancy. Of course this was many moons ago and things may have changed but I'd still expect my new OB now to treat me for everything.

There was prob nothing they would have done for food poisoning that only lasted about 6 hrs, but they didn't know it stopped. You just need to know what the protocol is for any illness since your under your OB's care now not your PCP.

I think they should call you back regardless of the issue. Address it at your next OB appt and just let them you know feel let down about it.

Thanks, ladies. I was worried that OBs don't deal with these general health issues, but I tried them first because it seems like the pregnancy is the most important issue. I'm glad to know you ladies agree with me that this is a problem. I'll be going in to see them next week after the a/s, so I will ask!!

No the on call dr should definitely call you. I've always gotten pretty quick return calls. It really shouldn't take them any longer than about 30 mins to give you a call back! I would also let your ob know at your next apt.

I would be annoyed. The only time I ever called my regular OBGYN (vs. the RE) after hours, it was because I Was bleeding 3 days after a pap. She called me back within 5 minutes to reassure me that it was fine. That's the type of support I need with my history and I don't think that's too much to ask. I'd definitely pursue it-make sure you have a dr. who you are comfy with. And I hope you are feeling better!
