Winter routines

What is your routine for getting everyone out of the house in winter? We had our first snow fall on Monday and now have fridged temperatures. My normal routine to get us out of the house on time is not working and I feel like a frazzled mess. I hate to be late and feel like I no longer know what to dress my kids in or what to take with me when I go out. I feel like I've lost my mind!

Re: Winter routines

  • First step is starting the car to warm up, because that makes everything so much easier. Then I just dress them accordingly and put their coat or a blanket over them and their hats on to get to the car. If it's warm already, they don't have to put it on, take it back off, etc. I put mittens in my purse usually.

  • I get everything ready the night before. When he's at DC he requires a lot more than when he's at my mom's house. The bag is completely packed and ready to go. I would actually put it in the car but I add his blanket and monkey he likes to sleep with when he gets up in the morning. It also prevents it from getting too cold as well. Coat, boots, hat etc are all waiting by the door as well.

Our garage is attached the house so I open the garage door and start the car too the warm it up. Winter hit here on Monday night so I know how you feel about the figid temps.

I think often how I'm going to do it with two kids and I guess when the time comes I'll have to rethink my plan of attack.

  • I can't get DH to remember a coat for L, so I am not much help.

I usually hang L's hoodie or fleece with gloves in the hood right next to the front door. An extra 5 minutes in the morning goes a long way. I need to put a blanket in the car to help with the cold.

  • Not that it gets very cold here, but I use thick hoodies, blankets, and a hat instead of bundling them when we are just getting into the car and back out to head right inside somewhere. We can leave jackets at daycare. I also had James climb into his seat and put on his seat belt while I walked around and clicked Leo's seat in then walked back around and finished buckling James. And love auto start, ask for it for Christmas if you don't already have it.

  • I pack everything up the night before.  and have it all ready by the door for everyone (coats, hats, bags, etc).  Its a bit of a cluttered mess but its working for now.  We'll see if that continues during the winter weather!  Now DH does leave after me with DS.

I want to get a bench and hooks for the entry way - something like this:

maybe without the pottery barn price tag, but the husband thinks it wont fit in the space we have so i am still trying to figure out what will fit for our entry way that will hold shoes, coats and bags for the three of us.

also i find the auto start on the car, or garage parking is key in the winter.  I am in the garage as i don't have remote start and DH is in the drive way with auto start.

we usually had the cars pretty toasty before we got in so i never added extra blankets and we live in eastern PA and had a good deal of snow and nasty weather last winter...
