Elf On The Shelf

I know that our LO are too small to even know who the elf on the shelf is, but does anyone do it with their older kids? Or is their a different version with a less creepy doll? :) I haven't started this tradition cause he kind of creeps me out but I love having traditions that the kids can look forward to so I'm thinking of jumping on the elf the shelf train. So what's everyone else's opinion?

Re: Elf On The Shelf

  • My grandmother bought us one while I was pregnant - I think her great grandmother friends told her it was a must-have lol. LO is clearly too little to really 'get it' this year but I'll probably have it out somewhere anyway.

  • My older kids love it and look forward to finding it every morning.
  • I am not creative enough nor do I have time. It's too much. I'm sure at some point I'll be the worst mom ever for not doing it.
  • I want to do it but I've been waiting for DS to be old enough. he just turned two so maybe this year would be a good year to start?
  • I just wanted to add that I wasn't planning on doing the elf of the shelf but my sister in law has one and my son kept asking why we didn't have one and ours would show up. So I have in and the kids do love it.
  • Idk what this is haha
  • We've already warned people not to introduce it to our kids ever. I can't stand that thing and all the facebook posts during the holidays. It was cute at first, but now some people have taken it too far, not to mention the company who has turned it into a  "birthday tradition" too, and you can buy clothes for it, geez. Power to the parents with the time to do those set ups too. Sorry, no thanks. I'm a Santa fanatic, so we will just hold our excitement for Christmas morning. Sorry to be a scrooge:)

Has anyone had friends go overboard with the toothfairy as well? A friend's daughter came home from spending the night at another friends and said 'mommy, how come the toothfairy doesn't leave pixie dust and colored water at our house'? I was like seriously? So now she has to do the same thing for her daughter. Just leave the money under the pillow and be done with it:) LOL!! I kinda like that idea though.

My mom used to sprinkle glitter "Fairy Dust" from the window to our beds.  I loved that.

My hairdresser told me that her step-daughter just lost her first tooth... and got $50 for it!  I seriously laughed in her face.

It's not something that I will be doing, just because it's not a tradition that I want to incorporate.  I will say that I guess I don't really see why it would be so hard to just move it around the house, though. If you forget one night, you forget. Oh well.

I've seen how people have gone overboard with it,though.  Why does he need to go in the kitchen and make a mess by tossing flour and sugar around to make it look like he was makingcookies?  I don't understand how that little fucker is supposed to be "watching the kids behavior and reporting back to Santa" and then turn around and wreak havoc on the house. Not a good lesson to teach a child.
    Lol @ little fucker! @nutmegs8‌ hilarious :)

  • @KrystaJ - I just noticed we got married on the same day!!

We won't be doing Elf on the Shelf - we will also be doing the Advent calendar and I just don't need one more thing to try to keep up with.

  • @krystaj completely agree on the advent calendar. I was given one every year by my Nana's best friend that was German. My husband buys them for me now and I still act like a kid each morning when I open that days:-)  we will also be doing advents!

I like the Benefit Beauty Advent Calendars ;)
  • I always thought Elf on the Shelf was a weird thing and couldn't put into words why. I saw this post of fB the other day and said yes! This exactly! This is an alternative idea that encourages kind activities instead of just "being good". I love it!

  • I'll probably do it when she is older but nothing elaborate and will state upfront some reason why it might not move every night because I'm lazy and forgetful.

  • My Mom bought an elf on the shelf for AJ.  She knew I was interested and a store had a great sale on them so she got it.  I think it will help the "belief" that he is there when he looks back at old Christmas pictures and sees the elf there. I should add I don't plan on it being a "you better be good because the elf is looking" thing just cute as the tradition of him being in different places/positions (but with minimal effort).  Plus this year I get a "practice run" in case it is too much and too aggravating to move about there will be no memory of what it was there for.  I like the kindness elves...no reason why elf on the shelf can't do the same things too.  I guess for me/my DH there are so many family traditions that surrounds Christmas time I want to ensure we have traditions - some of our own - for our family in place.  Also, Christmas is just such a magical time when kids are little.  It only lasts for so long and part of that magic is gone.  Yes, it is always important for me as a religious person to remember why Christmas is important to me and that will never change but the "extra" magic that you can only get with little kids around is something I'm really looking forward to.  I have no idea if that makes any sense and sorry it's so long.

@JujuB22‌ that is seriously adorable. I also love the glitter idea, mainly bc I love glitter and don't have enough excuses to use it.

As for the elf, I would like to do it but not everyday. How easy would it be to convince kids he only does stuff on the weekends?

  • @MegK82‌ hahahaha Meg!! That last part! So true!
  • @MegK82 - we did the pickle too! My nana used to hide it for us every year on Christmas Eve. Although we are not German as far as I know - I always wondered where that tradition came from. I always thought it was fun anyway

  • @babywear the kindness elves sound cute! that is something i might be able to get behind because it teaches a good value without being creepy or trading presents for good behavior.

For those who do advent calendars, what do you put in them? I have ever only seen the grocery-store ones with chocolate inside.

  • What cute ideas @mullenem and @KrystaJ! I especially love adding in activities like making snowflakes, and ending with the xmas eve jammies as that is a new tradition we plan to start this year :)
