IUGD diagnosed at 35 weeks

So I went to my bi-weekly doctor appointment last week and OB doc said I was measuring 2-3cm smaller than I should. So she sent me to do an non stress test and BPP profile later in the day. Both came back normal. 8/8 was on the BPP and NST came back fine. My baby girl is in the 6.5% for wt. She's 4lbs+/-11ounces. I was diagnosed with intrauterine growth delay. I had another NST and BPP on Thursday which both came back 8/8 and the NST came back fine again as well. I have an ultrasound tomorrow to follow up with a specialty clinic and now I am considered high risk pregnancy. I am a small person, I was born at 28weeks 2lbs 2ounces, my husband was born at 30 weeks weigh 3 lbs. I was less than 100lbs and am 5'2 before I became pregnant. I am just worried on how small will she really be and any health concerns and if we will have to spend time in the NICU, which where I am delivering doesn't have she will have to be transferred across the street to the other hospital to their NICU if needed. Can anyone reassure me.

Re: IUGD diagnosed at 35 weeks

  • Has the doctor mentioned delivering early due to iugr? My niece was born full term at 4 lbs 9 oz and went home after two days. No nicu time. Size didn't dictate lung maturity or ability to feed. But definitely discuss the implications of iugr with your doctor!

  • no she hasn't mentioned it, they are just watching baby Lexie closely.
  • I think the most important thing here is your drs are monitoring everything and that baby will be safe. I understand that baby would have to be transferred if he's early and needs NICU time, but let's look on the bright side. If that happens it means the NICU is the safest place for baby and it's right across the street so you'll be able to be there really quickly. You just need to trust that your doctors are monitoring you and baby and they will make sure everyone is safe. I'm sorry I can't give you more reassurance, I just think we need to look at it from the perspective of "although this isn't the best thing, my drs found it and are going to make sure my baby is safe." Good luck and keep up posted on what dr says!

  • As long as her BPPs and NSTs look good and she continues to grow on her curve I wouldn't be too concerned- some babies have to be small. I was born in the 3rd or 5th percentile or something and I was fine, just small.

You are a mom...no one is going to be able to reassure you but let's look at some important factors:

    1) You are diagnosed and being monitored.
    2) LO is further along than you (28w) and your H (30w)...combine that with the medical advancements over the last 20+ years
    3) There are worse and more stressful places for LO to be than at the NICU across the street. Think of how much longer it would take to get her into NICU care if the NICU was over an hour away...

That said you have done what you can at this point. It is pretty much up to her and your doctor.

  • Don't know much about IUGR but T&Ps for you and you LO.
  • My doc mentioned that very small babies are not necessarily less healthy. I think he said of those under the 5 th percentile some truly are growth restricted and skme are just naturally small babies.... Given your stats makes me think this is a case of a healthy small baby
  • No practical experience to offer, but I was a full term 5lb baby and perfectly healthy. My sisters all have full term 5-6lb babies too. We are just smaller people to begin with and it sounds like you are too. Thankfully, your doctors are all keeping an eye on things and will make sure you and your LO get all the care you need.

MH comes from the opposite side of things. His whole family were 10 lb and up! No GD or any complications, just bigger babies.
  • Can't tell you how many patients I have had where it says their baby is IUGR and clearly they are just little people! It's so itritating! Try to stay positive, baby is looking great and as long as baby keeps looking great you have nothing to worry about. Also a smaller baby will be easier to push out! And will fit in NB clothes longer :)

  • They were worried about my girl earlier in the pregnancy- I had several additional ultra sounds because her head was measuring in the lower 2 percentile , and she was running small overall. The last ultra sound had her up a little bit and most of her was on track- though her head was still behind. I have another ultrasound (but would have had this one no matter what) to see how she looks tomorrow... I am hoping all still looks good.

The good news is that your docs are monitoring it, the NICU is just across the street, you are borderline which means maybe she is just small?

Thoughts and prayers with you- keep us updated!
  • I am being monitored for this, but am not overly concerned. My son was born the day before his due date at 6 lbs. I was small, my husband was small, I am 5'1" and 120 lbs. My husband isn't a big guy. I feel with us it's genetic, but because I have other  stuff going on, they want to monitor it closely just to be safe. Hang in there. You are doing great. At least they are monitoring it.
  • I had an ultrasound today @ the speciality clinic, everything came back looking normal, thank gosh and she weighs 5lb-6lbs. she is pretty cramped in there as I am really small person myself so we will see how long I go.

  • With ds#1, I measured 4cm behind at 36 weeks.  I went for an u/s every week there after and 2x week NST.  I also had high fluid levels which concerned them.

At 36 weeks he measured at 4lbs 1oz

    at 38 weeks he was 5lbs 10oz

He was born at 39w5d and was 6lbs 14oz and 100% healthy.

He is now almost 7 years old and is just super slim (he's 4ft tall and weighs 42lbs).

So moral of my story, I was very worried that something was "wrong" and he's just a thin kid.

  • It is definitely stressful. I have Benn going in for nst's twice a week and ultrasounds once a week for the past 3 weeks because if IUGR (<5th percentile). They are talking about inducing at 38/weeks. I just keep reassuring myself that the docs are keeping a close eye on us and being prophylactic and find any problems early. I am praying that Baby doesn't need any NICU time.

Your NICU is right across the street, so it is super close. It won't be difficult to get to. And they are obviously keeping a close eye on your little one. Babies can definitely be small, but perfectly healthy. So we may be worrying for nothing, but that is simply part of parenthood ;)
