How many still on anti-nausea meds?

I was lucky to be prescribed Diclectin/Diclegis at 6 weeks, before morning sickness even kicked in, because of its sedative effects. I have recently tried to wean myself off of it twice and both times have encountered some serious nausea.

After my maternity clinic found out I had tried (and failed) to go off of it the first time, they asked me to try again before my 24 week appointment (next week)... Cue failure number two. My GP also seemed quite surprised that I still needed it.

Just wondering if anyone else is still in need of their anti-nausea meds and whether or not your doc has wanted you off of them? My understanding is that Diclectin is just a high dose of vitamin B with an antihistamine, so I don't know why it's a big deal to still be on it... (I will of course be asking at my next appointment.) Just curious if anyone is in the same boat?

I went through the same thing. I tried to quit Diclegis at 16/17 weeks and was still so nauseous. I finally quit two or three weeks ago on my second try and have only been nauseous a few times. My doctor was surprised that I took it for so long but said it was safe to take for my whole pregnancy if I needed it. He suggesting trying only one pill at night instead of two to try to wean off more gradually.

Good to know I'm not the only Diclectin junkie! J/k. I was initially on one in the morning, two at night and now just do one a.m., one p.m., but I guess I just find it disconcerting to notice such a marked difference when I try to cut down beyond that. I know many women suffer from morning sickness their entire pregnancies - maybe that's me and I was just lucky enough to have dodged the initial bullet with a preemptive strike.

  • I too tried quitting Diclegis and couldn't hardly find it in me to eat - so I've been scared to ever since. When I told my OB I needed more she told me it was 100% safe to take my whole pregnancy - so do whatever I needed to feel my best. I don't want to NEED IT - but I just love food so much and keeping it down I can't bring myself to do it again.

  • My last pregnancy I took diclectin morning and night the entire time. I tried going off it multiple times with no success. This time around I tried at 16weeks with no success. At 21weeks I tried again and it worked! Don't worry, if you need it stay on it.

  • I was on diclectin until the day I delivered with my first pregnancy. By 18 weeks I had cut down to just one pill at night but tried multiple times to wean off it with no success. The same thing goes with this pregnancy unfortunately. I've tried to quit but I'm still on 2 pills at night and I'm 24 weeks:(

  • I'm 23 weeks and still on Diclegis. It's been a miracle for me. With my first baby I got down to 98 lbs (I'm 5'6") and was nearing getting a feeding tube and IV pump for meds. My dr takes this stuff very seriously with me. I have missed a few pills here and there only to wake up super sick at 4-5 am. So for me there is no end in sight, well at least until delivery.
  • Just for the record, I'm not love titting everyone's responses based on good news - it sounds like some of you have had/are having a rough journey - just grateful for the feedback!

  • I'm still on mine, tried three times to come off and have worst sickness! My doctor/midwife is happy for me to continue on then for as long as I need!
  • I was terrified to go off the diclegis. I tried once and was nauseous. Tried again a few weeks ago and I've been ok. I still carry it with me just in case (I actually took one this weekend) but my ob was in no rush for me to stop taking it.

    Good luck!

  • I am also still on diclegis (4tabs a day) and zofran (2mg/hour or so). Thank you, HG. No hurry to get off them either.

  • I'm not glad we are all sick but I'm glad I'm not the only one!

I tried weening off Zofran a month or two ago and then got it really bad so my OB said to take the max amount. I take it around once a day now, twice if I'm really busy and on the move a lot that day.

My doc and nurse just said to take it as long as I need it, but I'm definitely going to bring it up again/remind them I'm still on it at my next appointment next week. I'm also flying for Thanksgiving and extra nervous about it since I'm still sick.

My MIL is a retired nurse and my SIL is a NP and they were concerned I was still taking meds and wanted me to try organic and natural remedies, but they can suck it because they don't know how terrible I feel and not much because the Zofran has helped.

  • I'm 24 weeks and still taking Diclegis. I take 3-4 pills a day. I always take 2 pills at bedtime and I still wake up nauseous every single morning. Usually the nausea goes away by 8:30 or 9am and I haven't vomited in a few weeks. I also take a pill around 3 pm. Without that afternoon dose I was getting too sick to eat dinner. I occassionally take a 4th pill first thing in the am but only if I am extra sick of need to be high functioning before 8am.

I just saw my doctor last week and they refilled the prescription and didn't seem concerned that I was still using it. I told them that when I forget to take it or tried to cut down on the number of pills the severe nausea would return.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one still sick as we near the end of the second trimester. Anyone else get so tired of hearing "but you should be past that phase by now" or "morning sickness usually ends in the first trimester." It's like, sorry I'm a special snowflake who is still getting sick. People act almost like it's your own fault for still having morning sickness, like you asked for this or something.
  • I take the B6, 1/2 a regular unisom tablet which is the same meds just cheaper. My nausea is better the last 2 weeks but both times I went off I got sick the next day but probably from motion sickness. Dr. Says it's ok to stay on it, but since it helps me sleep, I don't want to be too dependent on it. I'm going to go one night off every week to just see.
  • I'm at 23 weeks Monday. I weaned off Diclectin a lot from max dosage to Zofran then back to Diclectin. I take one pill around 2-3 pm and one before bed. I don't know if it really helps. There is still this once a week, for 1/2 day I just want to die then I'll be good again the next few days. Weird!! Oh well I'll take it over what I went through in first trimester. Thinking of going down to one pill this week.
  • Almost 23 weeks and still taking diclegis. I only take 1 a night now. I have tried (sometimes by accidentally forgetting and sometimes on purpose) to not take it and each attempt has ended up with me miserably nauseous the next day. I will probably try a few more times to get off it but- if I can't, I cant. It helps me sleep better anyway which is nice. At this point in my last pregnancy sleep was a disaster. Feeling a little bit more rested is really needed this time as I chase my toddler all over the place!
