What do we think of Harper?

I love the name Harper. To Kill A Mockingbird is my favorite book, so I would use it to honor Harper Lee, the author. Unfortunately, it has become rather trendy. What are your thoughts?

  • I voted "other". It's NMS but I don't mind it on other people's kids. I've only ever heard the name on girls.

  • I like it, but I know like 5 little girls 3 and under with the name, so I know too many to ever use it

  • I don't hate it, but I think it'll feel very dated to this decade. The Tiffany of the 2010s.

  • I said other.  I don't LOVE it, but I wouldn't disregard it entirely.  Prefer it on a boy.  (My cousin is naming her boy that, too.  Go her.)

  • I meant for a girl. It is awfully trendy, I think. Makes me sad, bc I really like the name--before it was trendy.
  • I would much rather see you name your son Collin or Collins instead. SSSOOO tired of Harper.
  • Harpy.

    Over it.

  • I'm pretty meh about it. There are worse names out there. But I don't particularly like it. And I agree it's really trendy.

Packer fan here!! :). I agree but
My DH actually loved this name for a girl, but I'm not a huge fan of it!!
  • Looove the name Harper!

  • There is a Harper in DD's Kindermusik class, I think it's cute. She's the only one I know IRL, she must be about 1 year old. I don't live in the States though so I'm not sure how popular it actually is there.
  • It would be on my girl list if our last name wasn't Walker ... I don't like "er" "er" names lol
  • My BFF just named her daughter this. I thought that I would like it better when I could attach it to the beautiful baby. She is a beautiful baby but I still hate the name.

  • @Joy2611 ILY. That right there is one of my issues. The other is that it just sounds bad.

  • Thanks for the opinions. I still like the name, and I really do love the book. But I see people's points. Definitely don't care for the trendy factor. I'm not expecting right now (just had a baby a few months ago) so it was just hypothetical:)
  • Loved it but it has gotten to trendy and over used!
  • It's trendy-popular, which is the worst kind of popular.

  • I liked Harper for half a second, but I knew it was a no-go because of how quickly it became trendy. I got over it very fast. What about Harlow? That was the alternative I came up with in my mind when Harper hit the no-way list for me. I'm not sure how this board feels about Harlow, or if it even reminds you of Harper, but that was where my thought process went.

So I have to say I love Harper - it was going to be my DDs name but then we went with Charlotte instead. I would not worry one bit about it being popular. My older DD is Emma, it was the number 1 name for the year...she has yet to encounter another emma in prek-1st grade or in any of her extra curricular activity classes.

It was never my style, but has recently become incredibly popular in my area. What about Lee?

People cite Harper Lee as the inspiration but I never buy it. I know a few Harpers and ****I don't think any of their parents read much.**** It's a totally biased view but I think people think it sounds "cool" and they're happy to tell you she's name after an author.

This makes me mad, because we actually used Harper as DD's MN because we do read a lot and both love Harper Lee (I teach high school English and DH is a lawyer). We're probably over the top in most of your eyes, though, because we also used Atticus as one of our DS's MNs. No shame...Harper Lee/TKAM fans for life!
  • To Kill a Mockingbird is my most favorite book, too. I have always loved Harper, and have always wanted to name my daughter that.  It is bumming me out that it is becoming so popular, though. But if you love it, go for it!
