Telling your boss?

I work in a job (substitute teacher) where I never see my boss unless there's a problem. I also won't have to take any extra time off. Should I still inform my boss that I'm pregnant?

Has anyone told their boss?
When do you plan on telling them?

Re: Telling your boss?

  • I didn't tell my boss with my first pregnancy, and she was so mad that she didn't hear it from me, first, regardless. Even if there won't be an issue, I still think you should tell your boss, just as a courtesy. I told my boss this pregnancy, pretty much as soon as I found out. Just in case I were to have another ectopic or miscarriage, she would have a heads up to the situation. She was much happier with me this time, lol

  • I, too plan on telling my boss once I'm out of my first trimester (January 2015). She knew of my miscarriage and was supportive. I sit firm like 75% of my job so, hopefully all will be received well.
  • I told my direct manager today for a couple reasons, but the main one being safety (they wanted me in an area where I would be around a lot of paint fumes and solvents). I also told them as a courtesy because I had applied for a transfer before knowing I was pregnant and was told today I got it (yay!). I have a good relationship with my boss so I thought it was only fair she knew before signing off.

You should definitely tell them at some point but unless there was a specific need I'd tell before you start showing so they don't hear it from someone else first.
  • We have a lot of threads like this if you want more advice-- if you type in something like "notifying manager" or "telling work" into the search box you could probably find more.

But I think that how and when to tell your boss is a matter of personal comfort on your part. Tell her/him whenever you're ready, within a reasonable amount of time so they can cover for your schedule if needed.

I'm on the phone app. Is there a search box? I searched the first couple pages and didn't see the subject so I posted my own.
  • I will not tell my work until at least 12 weeks. I have a desk job so there's no reason that they need to know before then.

  • My bosses figured it out already, but I wasn't planning on telling them until 12 weeks. Now I'm just waiting for my transfer to go through so I can move back to my home state before announcing it here. I don't want to be concerned about my pregnancy being the reason I wouldn't get transferred. I spoke to DH though and he's fine with me announcing it at work as long as no one posts it on facebook yet since we're telling our families when we see them at thanksgiving.

Tell your work when you're comfortable. It's totally a personal choice.

  • I work in radiology as a radiology technologist which is a lot of radiation so I have to tell my boss right away. Going to tell him today, so he can get me another radiation badge for me to wear down by my waist for the baby.
  • I don't want to tell mine yet but may have to if MS kicks in. I'm on my feet running around in a showroom all day, with walk in customers so it may become an issue. If it doesn't I'll wait til 12 weeks.

I know at least on my app, it's all the way down on the bottom. So you scroll down and before going to the next page there's a white box underneath all the page numbers-- just type whatever you're looking for in there and it should come up!
  • I will eventually tell mine. I'm hoping to get wait until after my 1st appt at the beginning of January but if I start to get really sick I will inform her sooner.

  • I told mine last week. Only because my hospital women's health hours close at 4pm... so I will have to plan all of my appointments during work hours and she was going to find out anyway. I am not telling my coworkers.

  • I spilled the beans to my boss because she kept asking me to take our daily smoke breaks and was pretty bummed I kept declining
  • The only people I told at work were the Head of Safety because of environment safety concerns i had and the person that takes care of Insurance enrollment. Otherwise, I would have waited to tell after the first trimester just in case I had a miscarriage. The Head of Human Resources found out from the 2 that I told because they were concerned. Now I know it important for your superiors to know because they have certain plans to go about pregancy.

I would suggest telling them after the first trimester if you aren't in a rush to mention anything, only because they might have plans for those who are pregnant. Whether it be accommodations or just congratulating.
  • My boss figured it out before I knew I was. He caught on to my eating habits and frequent bathroom breaks. I finally admitted to it when we had champagne in the office and I turned down mimosas. I never turn down mimosas. I was 5 weeks when he was questioning me and 6 when I spilled the beans. We are all close here, so it wasn't a big deal though.

  • I had to tell mine the day after I found out (3w3d) because he needed an explanation why I hadn't done something and instead of concocting a crazy story I told him the truth. It was totally awkward but I'm kind of glad he knows and so far it seems like he has kept his mouth shut. I work in healthcare so I am definitely at risk for having to spill the beans sooner than I'd otherwise like because I need to avoid patients with certain infections. I'm hoping I can at least get through an ultrasound and my first doctor's visit to ensure everything is going ok before going public at work.

  • I told my bosses and work partner today and swore them to secrecy. I know its super early but I felt it was important for them to be the first to know in case something happened. Plus, its hard to hide feeling sickly or tons of dr. Appts ;)

  • I am really close with my boss and told her right away! She was so excited for me and kept telling me she will be supportive in anyway she can...if I need shorter days or adjusted hours due to Ms just let her know! So far I just slept in one day (11 hours of heaven) and didn't have to feel
    Guilty about it!
  • I just asked for a significant raise at work, and haven't gotten an answer yet.  So I'm thinking I'll hold off telling them for a bit.

  • I had to tell my boss due to my work situation...working at a psych hospital with aggressive and self-injurious patients, its pretty dangerous on a day to day basis... I love my job, but I love my little one so much more than being on the floor and dealing with the behaviors.

  • I workin childcare so i yold my boss right away. I need some one to relieve me from my room and these sudden urges to use tge bath room are no joke, i also told h er of my plans to change my schedule after the baby comes.
  • I hear you on that. I work in mental health too (but in the community) and I definitely had to think twice about a few homevisits which I'd had no qualms about before pregnancy.

Exactly the same here, except we haven't discussed any changes for after baby arrives.

  • Not to be the negative Nancy but, I told my boss since my OB is 45 minutes away and I'd be taking time off next week to go and she was not very supportive. It's not official yet but, the promotion I was supposed to receive, I'm going to probably have to kiss goodbye. I was upset at first but, now I realize that it's just negativity and stress I don't need anyway!!!
  • I already told my boss as she was aware of my fertility treatments (had to take time off pretty often for it, and usually at the last minute, so I couldn't give a 1-2 week notice for time off like under normal circumstances). But we are SUPER close at my job. We're a smaller company and more like a family, so I'm sure that's a bit different than your situation.

Do what feels right for you. Good luck with whatever you decide.
