TTC after 35

18 day LP too long?

Today was 18 dpo and I was ready to jump out of bed this morning to take a PG test if my temp was still up. I took it, 97.19, saved it in the data on FF and then looked at my chart. Fuck. Severe dip almost back to the cover line. I go to the bathroom to pee, wipe and hello AF. I was getting my hopes up lastnight, which I kept telling myself to stop because I just end up getting disappointed. Is an 18 day LP considered too long? If I remember correctly over 10 is good and 14-16 is ideal? This is my 2nd cycle charting. Last month my LP was 16 days. Happy that I ovulated twice in a row now without meds and got news yesterday that my testosterone levels are back to normal at 26, which they were high in July at 76 which made my diagnosis of PCOS (along with my irregular periods) I've been taking inositol since Sept, because I've read it is supposed to help with PCOS, Looks like it's working!

Hope I'm not too bitchy to my husband today because I got my period. :)
Me: 37 DH: 37, married since Sept. 2013. "actively" TTC for a total of 13 months (after 7 months of TTC, took a 1 1/2 year hiatus due to work scheduling and wedding planning. Started up again after our wedding in Sept.) First evaluation by an RE November 2013

HSG-normal
OH-tiny polyp found, but RE assured me she doesn't think it's contributing to infertility and doesn't recommend me to remove it because it's so small.
DH's SA-normal
Hormones all within normal levels
Ovarian Reserve-RE says "is great" she's not concerned about my egg quantity (which I was until I saw her and results came back good!)

04/2012 50mg Clomid=BFN (prescribed by OBGYN, not monitored)
06/2012 50mg Clomid=BFN (prescribed by OBGYN, not monitored)
11/2013 100mg Clomid, with HCG trigger=BFN (prescribed by RE, monitored with US (2 dominant follicles) and baseline bloodwork done)
01/2014 100mg Clomid, with HCG trigger-(prescribed by RE, monitored with US-1 dominant follicle)=BFN
06/2014 7.5mg Letrozole, HCG trigger (prescribed by RE, monitored with US-2 dominant follicles), IUI #1 on 7/3/14=BFN
07/2014 7.5mg Letrozole, benched for IUI#2 this cycle, because I ovulated on my own before my follicular US. Progesterone suppositories=BFN Diagnosed with PCOS this month too. Testosterone levels high at 76. =(
08/2014 7.5mg Letrozole, HCG trigger with 19mm follicle. IUI#2 on 8/31 cancelled last minute due to family emergency.
09/2014 Taking a 3 month break starting this month. If not pregnant in 3 months, will start up again with medicated cycles and IUIs. Had all my labs and AFC re-evaluated this month also. RE says nothing much has changed since my eval last November, okay for me to take a little break. =)

  • I don't have anything to offer to your questions, sorry.  But wanted to say sorry AF came.

  • I don't know either. Everything I have read only talks about having short LP's. Sorry about AF
  • 18 days is very long.  I would hazard a guess your O day was wrong by one or two days, but it is not impossible.  Glad you O'd !  That is definitely a positive. there is another possibility but without evidence I'd not hazard that guess.  Best wishes!
  • @kelley72‌ what is the other possibility? Please share! I attached a copy of my chart, maybe FF was wrong and I did not ovulate when I thought I did? Thanks!

  • Ok, first your lp is 17 days long as indicated on your chart and that is lengthy but understandable.  I'agree with ff the way your temps are.

If you have an lp of 18+ you have a few possibilities of things going on but that isn't the case with you... a. pregnancy/ so if af returns then chemical/blighted ovum, miscarriage, b. a cyst which in your case is not accurate because you have had flo, c. the most obvious O date wrong.

    Best wishes

First of all, if you got your period today, 18 DPO, then your last cycle had a 17 day LP not 18 days.  You don't count the day of your period as another DPO from the previous cycle.  Second, 14-16 day LP is average, not necessarily 'ideal', it can be normal to have shorter or longer LPs than the 'standard' or 'average' of 14-16 days. It's certainly preferable to have a longer one than a shorter one, as it gives your body more time to allow an egg to implant; shorter than 10 day LPs are a concern because women might start shedding their lining before implantation can happen properly.  You don't have that problem, so that's a good thing.

Lastly, looking at your chart it is possible you ovulated on CD20 rather than the earlier one FF indicates - based on temps alone, you had just a few days of higher temps after the earlier O day FF gave you CHs for then a big dip, it's conceivable that ovulation didn't happen until later.

Ultimately, be happy you're ovulating and don't worry yourself over having a supposedly ideal LP.  As long as you're not facing a super short one, all is good.

ETA  I see by your chart you only had sex up to a couple days before FF says you O'd, then stopped.  You should really keep having EOD sex even past when FF says you may have O'd, because sometimes FF will adjust its O date, take away and give new CHs, or sometimes FF can just plain be wrong.  Best to cover your bases by continuing to have sex until you have at least a solid week or more of higher temps confirming O beyond a shadow of a doubt.

  • Thank you @kelley72‌ and @gscoville‌ for the great insight on my chart! Hubby and me "planned" to BD on CD 16, but he was too busy talking to his sister on the phone and I fell asleep waiting for him since I had to wake up early for work the the next day. I'll definitely keep on BDing a week after O, just in case FF is wrong! Thanks again ladies!

  • Looks to me like you ovulated on the 29th of the month.
    TTC#1 since Aug 2013, I'm 37, DH 41.
Maya Arvigo Abdominal massage (daily self care), plus TTC meditations.
I'm very sensitive to diet (gluten, avoid processed foods) and environment. Have a history of inflammation and tendinitis before going off gluten in 2009.
July 2014 - RE Visit #1: Eggs look good, Endometrioma on R ovary, HSG showed blocked R tube close to ovary. DH SA normal
DX: Endometriosis probably the IF cause and gunking up tubes.  Since egg reserve is high, RE says I can wait a couple months and then get laproscopic surgery to remove endo & clear tube.  If that doesn't help then move to IVF.
Dec 2014 - Saw new RE - does not recommend surgery on tube as it isn't likely to help.  Doubts I have endometriosis.  My endometrioma shrunk to neglible size (yay!)
    Seriously considering IVF in March/April
    12/17/14 - Natural BFP!
  • I was thinking I might have ovulated on the 29th too, but on the 29th I had sticky CM and I didn't have much of any CM the few days before, I stopped charting after the days of watery CM. Should I rely more on the temps or the CM? I also have PCOS, and I think I read with PCOS your CM can be all out of wack during your cycles.

Temps are always the most reliable - CM is a secondary sign only, you can really have EWCM, or any other kind, at almost any time of your cycle.  Have you thought of adding in OPKs?  Temps together with OPKs are probably the best combo for accurately predicting O.  FF can be much more accurate with OPK data added as well.

  • I think cd22 which is the 30th is better option but either way I do not believe ff is accurate with crosshairs
  • Thanks @gscoville‌ I plan on buying a box of OPKs this cycle and try it out. I really hope to get a BFP in the next 2 months, because I really don't want to start again with IUIs and medicated cycles in Jan!
