The pumping/storing/thawing to feed process???

Finally got my pump.  Going out to get storage bags today.  How does it all work?
Once bagged, do you freeze immediately?  Or how long is it good for once I pump it and store in fridge for let's say that night??
Best way to get it to room temp?
Will pumping hurt supply?

Re: The pumping/storing/thawing to feed process???

  • When I am not at work the milk goes right in the freezer. At work I store them in a cooler bag in the fridge with my pump parts. Then they go in the freezer when I get home. We either take a bag out and set it on the counter to thaw or thaw under warm running water. Sometimes in a bowl of warm water as well.  We have a bottle warmer we use to heat up the bottle, and it works really well.

    Freshly pumped milk:
    4 hours at room temp
    5-7 days in fridge
    6 months in freezer
12 months in a deep freeze
Thawed milk: use within 24 hours

  • I guess I'm a little different from the others. My preference is to store milk in the fridge, unless I knew it was not going to be used for more than 4 days, then I would put it in the freezer for long term storage. I rarely needed to dip into my freezer stash and did end up throwing a lot of it away because it was really stinky by 6 months in the freezer.

Freezing and thawing sounds like a PITA when you can just have fresh milk in the fridge.

  • Just to add to what others have said, always give your milk a sniff before freezing and after thawing. I found that my milk stays fresh 2 days in the fridge. At three days the odor starts to change. I don't know that it's "bad", but I know it's not as fresh. Knowing this, I use oldest first for daytime bottles and freeze any remaining the second day.
