daycare for nights and weekends

My DH and I are both in Retail Management. My problem is finding daycare for nights and weekends. We don't have family here and I am kind of freaking out about this. It's hard enough to think that I have to bring my child to a daycare, I have to add on the worry of finding daycare for off hours. Does anyone have any suggestions?????

  • Are you both working nights? I don't understand how one of you can't do evening etc? Switch off?

  • In my area there are a few in home day cares that offer 24 hour care. They are advertised on Craigslist, reviewed in yelp. I would also try to find a nanny, perhaps a college student, education or nursing major or something. I am able to post job listings on my local college/university job board.
  • It depends on what sort of care you are most comfortable with. In most cities there are care centers that offer nights and weekends. A nanny, although the most expensive, would be preferred. I've seen lots of ads for nights/weekends from local home-based daycares and people who want to watch children in the evenings for extra money.

I think some more specifics would be useful - Are your schedules fixed or do they change week to week? Could you change shifts and work during the day? Can you alternate days/shifts so that you don't need day care? Could one of your stay home or change careers?

  • We had strange schedules when DS1 was born. We contacted the community college in our town that has a great early childhood program. They posted an ad for us and a few college students replied. We had a lady from the program come to our house for a few hours for the overlap times. It worked great for us. If there is a program in your area, it's worth a shot.
  • Care.com is probably your best bet and you can get someone to come to your house rather than dropping your kid off. I've gotten like 13 jobs from that site in the past 5 years
  • Yes,we work nights and weekends. We do not have fixed schedules. In order to be a manager we have to have open availability. He is a site manager so he had more control, but I'm still an assistant. We both have to work 2 nights minimum a week, but still have to work the weekends. I'm trying to make this add affordable as possible. It's just frustrating that we have to pay for daycare + a babysitter.

I think investing in an au pair or nanny for live-in or round the clock care may be better for your situation.

Is it not possible for your company to be more accommodating? Because you will have to deal with sick days, doctor appointments & such.

Babies are unpredictable & I'd think some flexibility might work in everyone's interest.

  • I too worked in retail management and understand completely what you're schedule entails. Mine was I had to work 2 nights per week (til around 10 pm), was allowed 1 full weekend off per month, and worked every other sun. Holiday was a whole different beast.  Usually only 1 day off a week.  And had to work every weekend plus extended hours.  Once I was a full site manager I was able to give myself a set schedule where I worked the same nights and had the same days off.  Since you said that your DH is a site manager I'm assuming he writes the schedule for the store? Is there anyway you can work with your store manager to maybe work set nights.  This way you will really only need help on the weekends.  I had several associates and assistants that had children while I was managing.  I worked with them to make sure that their schedule was very accommodating. When I was a dept manager for a dept store 2 of the manager were married to each other and she had a baby.  I know they worked very closely with the store manager to coordinate their schedules.  My best advice is to be as open as possible now with your manager and work out a game plan.  Good luck!

  • Thank you for the advice. I'm hoping it will be that easy, but retail is very unpredictable so we will see. Ice just decided to not stress out about it and we'll just make it work :)
