Twin pregnancy and exercise

I'm 12w3d pregnant with di/di twins. Wondering what you may have been told about exercising when pregnant with two. Right now, I'm walking and doing light resistance training. I'm hoping I can continue, but want to stay safe, too. Thanks!

Re: Twin pregnancy and exercise

  • As long as your doctor gives you the green light, go for it! It is so important to stay healthy while you are pregnant. It will make it easier after you give birth to take care of you babies.  Just listen to your body and take it easy when you need to.

    ^ This.

I am a dance instructor and continued teaching up until the week before I delivered, but my body made me slow WAY down by the end to the point where just walking was all the exercise I could handle. I am  getting back where I was, though and I was surprised how much I was able to do again just 8 weeks pp.

  • I have to agree with just listening to your body, as well as your Dr. I try to walk several times a week, but if I start to feel short of breath or too tired, I stop and rest. I'm only 11w but sometimes even just a 30 minute walk feels like I am trying to do a marathon! LOL. That's when I know my body wants me to take it easy.

  • Listen to your body. Don't push yourself. Stay hydrated. That's pretty much it.

  • I didn't exercise much before getting pg so I certainly didn't take up anything new. I just continued as I was doing- walking to the park, chasing my toddler etc- until I just couldn't anymore. Shortness of breath, heart palpitations, BHs, pain etc told me it was time to lay off.

  • Pre-pg I was in good shape. Healthy weight, did yoga and lots of walking. Very early on in the pregnancy for me it was difficult to continue these things. I'm talking first tri. I tried, but the next day would be so sore in a way I had never felt before.

I did much less in terms of exercise the whole pregnancy. Working out for me was chores around the house.

Everyone is different. Like everyone else said, listen to your body and do what you can.

  • I ran a marathon the month before I got pregnant. At 5 weeks, before I knew it was twins, I tried running and was exhausted. By 30 weeks it was exhausting to stand long enough to make a sandwich. I bounced back pretty well and am back at running and going to the gym. First 5K next week!

  • My doctor was all for me exercising.  I was very active before getting pregnant.  I cross country skied, walked daily, hiked, and did prenatal yoga.  I was lucky - my di/di twin pregnancy and delivery went very well.  I swear by prenatal yoga - think it helped to move both girls into a head down position toward at the end.  By my 5th month of pregnancy, cross country skiing started to get more difficult/uncomfortable.  I listened to my body and didn't push it.  I also did the Tracy Anderson pregnancy dvd's.  Good luck!

  • Thank you, ladies! So helpful to hear of your experiences!
