Sex determination via ultrasound- Different with twins?

Hi everyone!

First, please don't flame me (at least not right away)- I am aware that the purpose of ultrasounds and other screenings is to determine any risk factors for the baby(ies), NOT to determine the sex. And personally, it's not at the forefront of my mind. However, my mom really wants to come from out of town to visit whenever I have the ultrasound that could possibly determine the sexes (this is fine with both me and my husband). Additionally, my husband can't come to every ultrasound, so it would be nice to plan to have him at that one. My husband is actually the more important factor, but his attending doesn't require long-term planning, while my mother's trip does.

The current plan is for an ultrasound every two weeks. For my singleton, the tech was pretty sure of the sex at 16 weeks. Should I expect the same for twins, or is it harder for some reason? I've even heard it's easier, although I can't imagine how.

Thanks in advance!

  • Our tech gave us a guess at 15 weeks, and verified at every scan thereafter - her guesses were accurate... but it still might be better to just ask not to have the tech make guesses until 18 or 19 weeks and plan to have them there, then, just to be sure. Earlier guesses can be accurate, but more room for error.

  • Thank you! A reasonably accurate guess is fine with me (and mom/husband)- no one will be upset if it changes.

  • They'll ask you if you want to know and how certain they are, so you could prob get them to give you a guess at 16w. I'd wait until 18w to have more certainty.

  • Our MFM US tech gave a guess at the 12 week NT scan. We considered it ONLY a guess, because of how early it was. We didn't go around telling folks or anything. My OB did a quick growth check scan at 16 or 17 weeks and said he could only determine one baby's sex because they were overlapping one another. We got confirmation at the 20w AS. Incidentally, the 12 week guess was correct.

  • We didn't have an us between 12 and 21 weeks. At 12 they wouldn't even look and at 21 it was obvious. I would think 16 might be a bit early, but it seems like it's usually right. I don't think it's any easier or harder with twins.

  • I had many ultrasounds before 20 weeks, but I never asked what their sex was.  At 20 weeks at the anatomy scan, we asked- we were at the MFM and I had my husband and my youngest sister with me.  The tech seemed surprised that I didn't know, but I wanted a definite answer since this was going to be my one and only pregnancy and I wanted sex specific clothing and items.
  • Found out @ 15 weeks & it has been confirmed 2 other times. It depends on the tech & the babies cooperation:)
  • We went for an elective ultrasound at 16 wks with both the twins and our singleton. She was able to determine the sex's no problem.

  • We got a guess at 12 weeks when we found out we were having twins. She said she was 99% sure about DS (he was not shy) and 70% sure about DD. We got confirmation she was right at every ultrasound thereafter.

  • We didn't have any ultrasounds between our NT Scan and our anatomy scan so no chances to try to determine the sexes before then. We found out at 20w2d and it was confirmed multiple times after.
