High chairs

So researching strollers and car seats was easier for me - I looked for safety , weight, ease if use, etc. but wtf makes a good high chair?? Help, moms!!

Re: High chairs

  • I like wide legs so it won't topple easily
  • Loading the player...
  • As pp have said, easy to wipe down and remove tray. Mine is on wheels which I love because I keep it in the corner when we aren't eating and it's easy to get it to the table at meal time.

  • I love my IKEA Antilop. One piece of plastic without nooks or crannies. In the summer, it can easily be hosed off. Breaks down easily for storage. And so cheap.

We got the Graco Blossom 4 in 1 highchair and love/loved it! It reclined pretty far back so DD could sit in it around 4 months when we were at the table for dinner.  It also has 3 different removable trays taht are easy to wipe off. We really liked that we could use the highchair and the booster for another child at the same time.  We knew we wanted more kids after DD, so we figured this would be a good option.  DD will still be using the booster while the new baby can sit in the highchair.
I second the Graco Blossom chair. Yes, it's pricey, but if you're going to have more than one baby it's worth it. It's easy to clean, comfy, and all around great. Watch BRU for sales - they happen all the time, then the price tag is a bit easier to swallow.

Depends on what you are going for: we have a svan, similar to a tripp trapp. Easy to clean (at least for us) blends in to our existing furniture (we plan to leave it at the dinning table till the kid is in elementary school), allows our kiddo to be independent (easily get to the table and off).

Some people prefer a smaller footprint, fewer pieces (the svan has a lot), more "one piece" for cleaning and definitely less expensive.  The svan is not made for any of that =)

    Edited for the downsides.
  • I had a chicco one and it sucked. It had all this padding and nooks and crannies. It was so gross. I periodically hosed it down. It was the only way to clean it. Then it started to mold on the plastic parts and then cracked.  Just gross.

DD uses the fisher price space saver high chair now. It attaches to a chair and it's portable. I like it.

I think I may get the ikea one for this next one. No padding.
  • I have the Chicco Polly.  My experience isn't as bad as the one mentioned above and has been used for 2 children.  It does have multiple clear trays that snap on.  That said I would probably get the space saver if I had it to do over.  It just takes up so much room.

My husband and BIL made a tripp trapp chair for my toddler. I love it and am hoping to convince them to make two more so all the kids can have one. They are quite pricey to buy though.

  • FP Space Saver fans here. I see no point in adding one more thing to my kitchen space. The space saver just sits on the regular chair and has a tray for when he was small and now it just slides right up to the table. And it's portable.

  • I have a Graco DuoDiner that can sit on the stand or be strapped to a chair.

Pros: It has a removable tray. The height and recline are adjustable. It has wheels to roll it around fairly easily. It can be strapped to a chair.

Cons: It is bulky and takes up a lot of floor space. I didn't end up taking the chair part to family's houses as much as I thought since it took up so much room in the car. The cover is difficult to remove and put back on properly for cleaning and I could never find a spare one to rotate out, since sometimes it needs washed after every meal. It has held up pretty well for being washed very frequently. I finally quit using the cover. The height adjusts just by lifting the seat upwards, so if you try to pick the thing up to carry it, it automatically grows by a foot, very annoying!

Overall it has been just fine, but I like the traditional wooden high chair that my parents used when they were kids MUCH better and wish I would have spent the extra money for something like that.
  • We have a restaurant styled high chair.  Its Easy to clean. I nannied a bit and hated the traditional high chairs, every time I cleaned it I felt like it was time to eat again.  I personally like having our kids directly at the table.  It was about $30 and has made it through two kids so far.
  • We have a vintage wood one we used with our daughter. Randomly found a matching one right before we found out we were pregnant and I somehow convinced husband we needed it. Turns out we're having twins, so I'm glad I found it.

We had a Chicco Polly which was great, but I like the style of the vintage ones (which we painted teal).
  • We have a boon one. It's smooth plastic, so really easy to clean. It has the removable plastic trays, but we usually just skipped the tray and wheeled it up to the table. It has a pneumatic lift, so it easily adjusts height to fit different tables and counters. It was expensive, but I've been really happy with it.

I would never get a padded or cloth one. I can't imagine how horrid that would be to clean.

  • I agree with the recline. My son was reclined in his high chair at a month! It was indispensable to us.

Do you have the plans they used? DH loves to build furniture and my dad owns a remodeling business, so they are both pretty handy. They are planning to build baby's crib, and I think this would be another fun project for them!
  • FTM here. We have the peg perego siesta on our registry. The reviews online seemed pretty good.
Not sure if any moms on here have a different experience with this high chair though.
  • We have the OXO Sprout chair, and we love it. It is super easy to clean, blends in with our furniture, and we'll be able to use it as a junior chair also.

  • We have a Trip Trapp as well and I really like it. It's solid, so it's nice that even with my clumsy toddler  that chair isn't going to fall. Grandparents have the Ikea and kiddo has knocked it to the floor multiple times because it is so light weight.

I also have and LOVE my Chiccco Caddy. It hooks onto any table and supports LO up to 35 pounds. It's much easier to clean than other hook ons, and we use it all the time. It is also easy to carry in and out of restaurants and fits in most pieces of luggage for travel. It comes apart and goes in the washing machine and it doesn't matter how disgusting it is, it always washes to look new.

  • We have a FP space saver. I liked it for when it was being used as a high chair with the tray. It didn't work well for us as a booster. The arms are too high for it to fit under the table so DD was really far away and hard a hard time reaching things. It worked though.

  • I got two for DD, one is the kind that straps to a regular chair.  I like this kind because it takes up less space and space is limited in my house.  Also, we got a cheap travel one from walmart which I absolutely recommend.  You won't believe how many events you end up taking your little one to like birthdays, family dinners, camping, whatever, where you end up trying to hold your plate in your lap, and infant, and attempt to feed them and you without getting food on yourself.  Much much easier to take a plastic 2lb folding travel seat with you.

After seeing this post I had to post a "must haves" post. This FTM didn't even really think of a high chair. I guess I was thinking that would be a little further down the line. Goodness at all the stuff babies/kids need. I'm overwhelmed!! Please share your shopping lists :)

I'm clueless...I didn't know there were so many types of high chairs. Someone also just turned me onto the mamaroo swing. Where do these cool gadgets hide?
  • My sister used a bumbo seat when she would travel to my house or the grandparents. Once she got a little older and could it up on her own really good - she used a high chair.

I agree @dana1047 - too many gadgets for my brain to wrap around.

  • I have two, one portable and one that lives at home. The portable is an Inglesina Fast Chair. It clamps onto the table and is ideal for restaurants and taking to people's houses that don't have high chairs. It costs about $50, and it is worth every penny. We've bought them as shower gifts and when we used it when S was younger we'd constantly have parents and servers ask where we got it. We've even used it on picnic tables in the park. I looooove this chair.

The one we have that lives at home is the Stokke Tripp Trapp. It's wooden and adjustable and can hold a full sized adult. I have a love hate relationship with this chair. It's expensive, and it needs to be pulled up to a table because it doesn't come with a tray. But, it's attactive, it's not any bulkier than a regular chair sitting at the table, it's adjustible so my kid will be in it until he can sit properly in an adult chair (no need for a booster seat) and it's very well made.
We have both of these chairs as well.  I didn't ask for the tripp trapp...my SIL took it upon herself to buy it for us instead of the one we registered for.  It was very sweet and generous of her, but our kitchen table is bar height, so we can only use it in the dining room, which we use like once a year.  We use the Inglesina every day attached to our kitchen table and love it!

  • I feel like this is one of those things you need to try out in the store before you commit. We have the oxo sprout because it's not too bulky and it has seat pads that are waterproof and easy to wipe down. I also like that the tray fits in my sink and can be rinsed off at the end of the day. (I used to wash it after every meal before DS mastered a bowl.)
  • We have the Fisher-Price Deluxe SpaceSaver High Chair from BBB. I love that the straps are rubber and not cloth so they are much easier to clean and do not stain or keeps smells. It also has a removable tray insert.

  • I have the tripp trapp and DS still uses it at 3yo. You can buy an infant seat attachment and tray that work very well. It cleans easy, grows with him, sturdy, doesn't tip backwards. I love it and DS loves it. Too much in fact...I didn't want to buy another one for DD who is now 15 mo since I figured he'd want to sit on a regular chair...nope. So DD is still sitting in a hand-me-down FIscher Price space saver. I like that one fine enough, but DD has flipped herself and the chair backwards and that is freaking me out. So now that we're expecting #3 I am on the lookout for a tripp trapp on craigs list.

This is actually my biggest downside: I don't want to tell my DH that I want a second svan...I'm hoping the babe is a girl, because I know that my ILs will be all freaky-happy and buy it for me  =)
  • IKEA all the way. So easy to clean and cheap!!! Best purchase we've ever mad for our first child.
