Wake to feed?

Do you ever wake LO to feed during the day? DS usually eats every 3 hrs during the day but sometimes is sleeping at the mark. I never know if I should wake him or just let him sleep. I'm just nervous if I let him sleep he will make up for it at night. ( he's 8 weeks by the way)

  • I wake my baby during the day to eat every 3 hours right now to not confuse day and nights, etc and she sleeps from 8pm-7am (the past 2 nights - fingers crossed this stays that way!)

  • I think it just depends on how well your baby is gaining weight at this point. I allow my little chunker to sleep at night. We got a solid 8 hour stretch last night.

  • I'm pretty sure daycare wakes DD up to eat during the day, so I do the same on the weekends. A few times I haven't woken her up and she only slept maybe another hour. I figure as long as she continues to sleep at night, occasionally pushing back a feeding to let her nap isn't a big deal

  • If I need to I wake my 8 week old at the 3 1/2 hour mark. I feel like 4 hours is too long. She had trouble gaining weight in the beginning and I am still worried about it even though she is gaining great now.

  • We haven't had a weight gaining problem so I let her sleep. She's been fine at night sleeping 5-6 hours with 8 hour stretches this weekend.

  • I usually don't wake him up now that he is gaining weight well and growing like crazy. I did when he was tiny until he was well above birth weight but since we are all past that stage, I was waking him up when I was uncomfortable because I knew he was past his normal meal time. Now, if he's sleeping and I can feel that I'm filling up, I just pump and let him sleep. Sometimes sleep can be a rare occurance in this house of crazy, you take it when you can get it!

  • I wake LO during the day every 4 hours but I let her sleep at night. Our pedi said to stop waking her at night because she's gaining well.
  • @Bella2425‌ - she is 7 weeks old - I've been following the schedule from momsoncall.com since 2 weeks. Not going to lie - it's amazing and I'm shocked shes doing it so young as I was expecting that to happen around 10-12 weeks.

  • I'm im shock that this many babies sleep that long during the day. My LO is 2 months and she hasn't slept 3 hours in a row during the day since she was just days old. We are very lucky to get an hour and a half nap in.
This... we sleep at night, 4 and 5 hour stretches are normal for her at night.. but during the day.. omg every 2 hours. You can set your watch by it.

Since she started sleeping at night, it's every 2 hours here too. I look at my app and it's been 1 hr 56 mins from last feeding every.time

  • We feed on demand, so I only nurse when he wakes up. I'll probably start working toward a timed schedule in a few weeks, but for now he eats when he wakes up.

  • I just started using baby connect today to track sleep and my LO only sleeps 20 min naps during the day, with the exception of 1 two hour nap in the late morning. I wish his naps extened out. Even an hour would be great!
  • My girl pretty much doesn't sleep during the day but I get up to 6 hours sometimes at night.. However then when she wakes up she stays awake for like three hours before deciding it's sleepy time
  • Not gonna lie, just looked up moms on call and, sorry, but they think it's ok to let a 2 wk old to CIO, um no thanks. Maybe if I was formula feeding I could be on a schedule, but he seriously eats all the time. There is no way in hell I would let my 8 wk old CIO. The AAP even say that's waaay too young to be following he CIO method. That book is aimed towards children younger than 6 months when it should be aimed at children OLDER than 6 months. I had to rant because my pediatrician was just ranting about this same thing. Many babies that are left to CIO too young are at risk for FTT and I would rather sacrifice a little sleep to know my baby is growing and developing like he should be.
  • There's a time limit on cio (a 2 week old who is healthy and gaining weight should not cry more than 3 minutes) and ultimately you know your child and gut instinct prevails and books recommendations.

  • @HorseLover11‌ I get that there's a limit, but, in the book it says if they calm down even for a second, to restart timing-- that could end up letting a 2 wk old CIO for 20 mins if they do that several times. I get a lot of people like this book, but just as many don't, and I'm going with my pedi on this one and not even considering CIO method until LO is at least 6 months old.
  • @ahlome08 that's why I said you trust your instincts ultimately. I don't critize or critique anyone else's techniques that work for their family. I only share what's working for me and I don't need to be made to feel I'm hurting my child. Not that you intended that but that's how it feels.

Like I said, it might be different with babies if they're FF, and I get people do different things for their family, but, whether it works or not, it's against what the AAP suggests. Not trying to make you feel bad about how you parent, just putting the information out there to people who might take it to the extreme . Unfortunately, we don't live in a world where people actually read everything, and I've known people that think CIO (even though it states the amount of time for age), means until the baby stops crying. I've known people that got lectured by their dr because their child wasn't gaining enough weight because they thought babies were "supposed" to be on a specific schedule. I'm sure many people that do the CIO method trust their instincts more than the books, but there will always be people who don't get that.

I let him sleep during the day but he stays up pretty good then too he eats every 3 to 4 house during the day,(a little more now since he is going through a growth spurt) he had no problem gaining weight and he is a big eater. But we won't let him sleep past 5pm we keep him up from then till 9am and then when he is feed and changed he goes right to seep till 3am and then don't wake till 8 or 9am
  • Our ARNP told us that we didn't have to wake him unless he went past five hours for some reason. He lost some weight due to a stomach bug so I went back to waking him. But now he is gaining again so I let him sleep. He very rarely goes past three hours. In fact he is stirring as I write this, right at three hours!

  • I keep an eye on her 'signals' and feed her on demand. She's been sleeping overnight from 10pm to 4.30am and then sleeps until around 9am. I believe in the mantra of never waking a sleeping baby!

    1) I'm pretty sure hunger cues are the same for ff babies as it is for bm fed babies. They still can be fed on demand, on a schedule, or a combination of the two

    2) we're waking her every 3 hours for feeds but I'm not sure when that should (or if it should stop) during the day. We're doing it because she's so little (and on ped's orders). I think though, the bigger they get, they should still be eating every 3-4 hours during the day. I say when in doubt ask your pediatritian.

  • My LO is 10 weeks old today and eats on a pseudo schedule/demand. Every three hours is the goal but in the evening he sometimes eats after an hour and a half. I think FF babies have different appetites, just like BF babies, so sometimes they want more than other times. That said, I shoot for the same total oz (28) and feed him whenever he acts hungry. If it's close to the last feeding, I make a smaller bottle. We do usually get one good nap in the afternoon where he ends up going 4 hours between feedings bc of school pickups. He eats his last bottle and is in bed around 8, wakes 6 ish.
