This is a check-in for May mamas of LOs with reflux. Returning or new to the Check-In, we'd love to hear from you!

1 - How old is your LO and how long has s/he been treated for reflux?

2 - How is LO doing? Any new developments, successes or challenges since the last Check-In?

3 - Any questions or tips for other reflux mamas, or anything else to share?

4 - Are you dressing LO up for Halloween?  If so, as what?

1 - DD is 22 weeks old today.  She was diagnosed with reflux ~8.5 weeks and had been on meds (first Zantac for a week, then replaced by Prevacid) until early October.

2 - She was fine the first 1-2 weeks after she stopped taking the Prevacid.  Then she was HORRIBLE all of last week.  Projectile puking and lots of spit-up and choking every day.  Finally on Saturday I took her back to the chiropractor.  The chiro said her stomach was a bit out of whack and did some work on it.  The chiro also recommended Colic Calm as a homeopathic way to help her reflux instead of Rx meds.  The rest of Saturday and all day Sunday she was a dream.  Today's Thursday and it's Nightmare on Elm Street Part 79 all over again.  I just tried for an hour to put her to sleep.  I finally had to give up and leave bc I was so upset.  DH is trying now.  I came out here and cried.  Between her teething and the reflux, I honestly don't know what to do.  I feel like all day long I'm giving her something -- gas drops, teething tabs, Colic Calm, probiotics.  It all seems like too much, but yet still not working.  We might have to put her back on meds.

3 - I know I sound like a broken record and I feel badly for always being a negative nelly, but I FUCKING HATE REFLUX!!!!!!  I hate it, I hate it, I hate it!  I hate that it hurts and upsets my baby.  I hate that it robs her of sleep that she needs!  I hate that it is robbing ME of precious time spent adoring and cuddling with my LO instead of constantly trying to put her to sleep for hours on end, and tainting the memories I'll have of her.  5 months old and this still SUCKS.

4 - DD is going to be an ice cream cone for Halloween.

New to this!  Totally forgot there was one.

1 - How old is your LO and how long has s/he been treated for reflux?
He will be six months next week and has been treated for about a month.

2 - How is LO doing? Any new developments, successes or challenges since the last Check-In?
He is doing a lot better than he was, though we still have our days.  Zantac did nothing to help so he is on Prevacid now and doing SO much better.  I hate having to give him something so strong, but he is.much happier and can sleep.  I have noticed that if I have a lot of dairy it seems to aggravate, a little milk in my coffee or some cheese seems to be fine, but ice cream or a glass of milk/cereal with milk and he seems to spit up more and cry a lot the next day.

3 - Any questions or tips for other reflux mamas, or anything else to share? Not that I can think of.

4 - Are you dressing LO up for Halloween?  If so, as what? Probably, but not sure what as yet. He is too big for the raccoon costume I have that was his older brother's.

@giggler25‌ I am so sorry to hear your lo still isnt feeling well :( seems like she may need to go back on meds and thats ok!

1.DD turned 5 months on the 20th and has been on zantac since 1 month, except for 2 weeks of trying prevacid.

    2. DD had a rough beginning of her week. Stupid me decided to try enfamil gentlease thinking that she may not need the thick AR anymore since she gets solids. I was wrong! She was spitting up a ton for 2 days. She went through 8 outfits on tuesday, 1 of those were from a blowout though. I increased her zantac back to .6 ml 2 times a day. I also started giving her 6oz instead of 5oz bottles and she seems very happy now with very little spit up! She has good and bad days though. @giggler25‌ I know what you mean about giving meds. I hate that instead of stopping meds, im increasing.

    3. None that I can think of.

    4. DD is going to be a ladybug for Halloween!

@Mamarazziof3:  Welcome!  Sorry to hear that you're joining the ranks of mamas with reflux babies, but so glad to hear that the Prevacid seems to be working well for your LO!  I have heard that dairy aggravates reflux; I think due to the increased mucous production or something like that.  Did your LO just recently develop symptoms of reflux at 5 months old?  Or was it something he was struggling with prior but not treated for?

@bridetobe9132013:  Thanks so much for the moral support.  I am definitely going to have to do something because the past 2 days have been hell with her sleeping.  And now she's fussing again while eating too.  Lovely.  I called the pedi today to ask to put her back on medicine, but to be honest I don't think our pedi knows WTF she is doing when it comes to reflux so DH and I are going to try to take DD to a pediatric GI this week to figure out a plan.  So sorry that your LO had a rough week last week!  Try not to beat yourself up about the formula.... you didn't know!  I'm glad that it seems you have the Zantac dosage figured out though now!

@giggler25 sorry your pediatrician hasn't been much help :( good luck with the specialist and definately come back and update about your visit! I just started feeding DD more the past few days and she seems to be happier.

For any of you that have LOs on medication...  are there any medications that help on demand?  Or do they have to stay on them consistently.   My LO has silent reflux and it doesn't flare often, but when it does I feel so bad for him.  I can hear the wet burp and then he cries.   I was wondering if there was something that could be given just as needed.  His pedi didn't think he needed to be on meds full time.

I am not sure of on demand medications. Is your LO eating cereal? I know it is supposed to help with reflux. Also, Is your LO on formula or bm? I have DD on Enfamil AR, which is thicker for reflux.

He's drinks BM and we haven't started any cereal yet.  I think I'll call the nurse.  It can't hurt to ask what they recommend and we're still 4 weeks away from his 6 month checkup.  Thanks for the cereal suggestion.

Good luck! I hope you can find something to help your LO. Update with what the nurse says.

@bridetobe9132013, I almost forgot to update.   They prescribed zantac for us to try for a few weeks leading up to his 6 month checkup.   I think it might be helping, but maybe it's wishful thinking on my part.  Do you all recall how long it took to see results ?    On the 2nd day, he slept 6 hours, followed by 5 1/2 hours the next two nights.  This is a huge improvement for us (and the nurse said that reflux could be a cause of night wakings).

I am glad you are seeing some improvement! DD has been on Zantac since June so I dont remember exactly how long but I think we saw results around 1 week after she started it.

@QOTR‌ , I think we saw some improvement within the first few doses of zantac. I know for sure that before the pedi increases DD's dose, she started to have symptoms flare up if she missed or was late for a dose.

Hope things continue improving for your DS.

thanks @Katzalia.  He slept almost 7 hours in his initial stretch last night.  I'm starting to think this isn't a fluke!   I'm relieved, but it also makes me sad that we waited this long to get him help.
