Every year I get a couple of kids from the Christmas tree and my previous job we took donations and bought gifts for the local kids that are sheltered at DHS. What are other charities that are worth looking into? After my ordeal with losing Noah, I am more than likely going to focus my giving on the animal shelters and doing volunteer work on Saturdays. I still want to put some effort into an organization that really needs it. (that sounds bad because they all "Need" it, but you know what I mean).
Re: Charities During the Holidays
@BPaws the nursing home idea is a great one, we have an assisted living facility across the street that just opened in the past year, so maybe we will bake some goodies and take them over!
I try to pop in during other parts of the year as well. Older people love having someone to talk to and they always have the best stories!
Currently I volunteer at food pantries and soup kitchens. It's rewarding.
We also sponsor a few children through programs offered at our church. DH and I try to pick the older kids, since people are usually so eager to buy for babies and toddlers. Our church also works with a local nursing home, and they love getting visits from kids, so we will probably take DS this year. On Halloween they had trick or treating early in the day, and we went. They loved seeing all of the kids dressed up.
@aliletz I had no idea they have NICU cuddlers! It's so sad to think that any of the babies in there don't have someone with them. I volunteered in the pediatric unit of a local hospital in high school, and there was always some kid who's parents weren't around. I'll never forget a mom who walked in one morning to her baby's room, she had RSV and was on day 3 of her hospital stay. The mom hadn't stayed one night with the baby, and told the nurse it was pretty nice to get a full nights sleep and not have the baby waking her in the middle of the night. Saddest thing ever! I hope your friends get to adopt the baby!
