TTC after Mirena

After waiting a few days to be allowed to post....I'm almost scared to! lol Everyone in here is so....honest haha

I'm just interested in stories or pointers for TTC after Mirena. I had mine removed a week ago today with very slight spotting that night then I started bleeding on Thursday. I'm not sure if this is a period or if it's just from the removal but it's very heavy. It has not really stopped but it has lightened up and then comes back pretty heavy. This would be day 6 of this "period" (if that's what I call it?).

I did join FF and started temping two days ago. I also have OPKs but I'm not sure when to start taking them?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I did start temping because I knew that would be the first thing that would be suggested lol

Thanks ladies!

Re: TTC after Mirena

  • Welcome.

Honestly, I would wait a cycle to start using the OPKs, but that's me. You have no idea if your next cycle is going to be 20 days or 90 days. So trying to guess when to start using them is going to vary widely. And unless you got the super cheap ones online, it's likely not worth it right now.

Son: Jackson, 11/02/06, stillborn due to PPROM and IUGR. Over the next ten years we had 9 miscarriages from 8-14 weeks. On May 18, 2016 my daughter, Ridley, was born. We're OADNBC.

I do have the cheap ones from online but that's a good point, thanks!

  • Typically start using them around CD10. But coming off birth control is likely to make things weird.

  • I started using OPK's on CD 8 of cycle #1. OTOH, I haven't taken chemical birth control in a decade or so. I have pretty normal 29ish-day cycles and no reason to think that suddenly this cycle will go poof. I agree with PP's that coming off birth control I wouldn't bother yet. Once things start to normalize it seems the standard is to start between CD8 and CD12.

  • Thanks ladies, I might start taking them on CD9 bc my boyfriend will be back from Japan then and I'll be extra curious lol

I do understand it could take some time though

  • I've been off mirena since May and went pretty quickly to a pretty regular cycle after the first one, which was about two weeks longer than normal. So I agree with PPs that waiting a cycle to let things sort out before worrying about opk is probably good idea.

My doc had said it was fine to start trying right away. I didn't really start for a few months, though (just bc I was getting married, not bc of the mirena).

I hated my cycles on mirena, ha, I'm so happy to be rid of it!

This! Coming off bc is different for everyone. My anecdote: had a heavy heavy withdraw bleed two days after removal of Mirena I didn't get my 1st real period until cd 39. Really wish I had started temping from the get go. My advice is constantly temp! Welcome and good luck!

  • I just had my Mirena removed on 10/20.  Started heavy bleeding on 10/23 (crazy heavy, was worried I might be bleeding to death!)  Lasted about 8-9 days.  I decided to start using OPK's on CD 10, got the wonderful smiley face on CD15 (so right on track).  I've always had a really regular cycle and had regular "spotting" while on the Mirena but no real period.

We BD right at ovulation and I'm in the TWW right now.  My doctor told me I could start trying right away.  We thought we were going to wait at least one full cycle to make sure things were back on track....but that went right out the window!
  • My ob also recommended waiting 2 cycles.  Which I did and took the opportunity to chart temp and cm.  I didn't start opk's until month #2.  My cycles post mirena have been very different than my pre-mirena cycles, just as an fyi.  And AF has been much lighter as well.

  • I had my Mirena removed beginning of December, had a withdrawal bleed within a few days and then my period started about 2 weeks after that. I got pregnant the first cycle, and miscarried just before 6 weeks. Got pregnant again shortly after and had a missed miscarriage (found out at 12 week appointment baby had stopped growing around 7 weeks.) The second loss was due to a partial molar pregnancy, so nothing to do with the Mirena. I would ask your doctor if they suggest you wait -- some do, some don't. Personally, I wish I'd waited a cycle or two.

How did you confirm ovulation? Again, anecdote: got a positive OPK on CD 12 right after removal, however, I didn't ovulated for another 2 weeks (speculation, of course, since I got my period on CD39). Your hormones will do some crazy things after bc. Just because you turned a OPK positive doesn't mean you ovulated, you can have multiple LH surges throughout your cycle. Either way, good luck to you.

  • I had my Mirena removed 8-29-14, had massive removal bleeding for 8 days following and then got a real deal AF on CD46. I am not using OPKs and i'm still getting into the routine of temping. Every person is different  when it comes to their body and it looks like you got every under control. Good Luck :)

  • Did your doctor give you any guidelines after removing it? My doctor recommended waiting 2 cycles before TTC due to increased risk of miscarriage. I only waited one cycle (as I found some conflicting information on if the 2 cycles were really necessary). I ended up having a miscarriage (maybe I should have waited the extra cycle, or maybe that had nothing to do with it, I guess there's no real way to know). But anyway, my point is that if your doctor made any recommendations then definitely listen.
As for my cycles, they have been longer than they were pre-mirena so don't be surprised if you develop a "new normal".

She told me I could start right away

  • I had my Mirena removed late June of 2013. I had some bleeding right away and a period a couple of weeks later. My doctor told me to wait one cycle before ttc. I haven't been pregnant since taking if out.

My bleeding has been seriously heavy! It started about two days after and got gradually heavier. Today is day 6 so I hope it'll let up soon! Good luck to you!

  • Just like there's no guarantee that your cycle will go right back to normal...there's no guarantee that your cycle will be all crazy.  The heavy bleeding was nuts, but I took some ibuprofen (helps stop bleeding) and drank raspberry leaf tea (helps with uterine contractions) and they both seemed to help.  Good luck to you as well!
  • Well I am on CD8 and the bleeding has stopped! Thank goodness. I started temping a few days ago and I will start OPKs tonight or tomorrow. I know I could be taking them for a long time but they're internet cheapies so I'm going to go ahead and see if I can see a surge.

My boyfriend will be home from Japan tomorrow! :D

  • It took a couple cycles to see a true ovulation pattern after I removed mirena. Definitely start temping, and then you can get a good idea from FF when to start opks.
    Good luck!
