Trouble TTC

Maybe a dumb Question - HSG vs Saline Sonogram?

I understand what the HSG is, and I googled saline sonogram, but what is the major difference?

Also, has anyone heard of an HSG being done with saline instead of dye? That is what my OBGYN said they do in office - and now I am wondering if they are calling it an HSG when really it is a saline sonogram? (goodness, I hope not, that would be really disheartening)

Re: Maybe a dumb Question - HSG vs Saline Sonogram?

  • I had both done. I had my HSG done in the hospital as outpatient. One of the PA's from my ob/gyn's office performed it with the help of a radiological technician. When it was time to use the dye the PA inserted it through the catheter and an actual Radiologist came in to do the x-rays. He told me right then and there the results. My RE did the SIS in his office. It was done using an internal ultrasound where a saline solution was put in. They're both different tests! Hope that helps.

  • Thank you all! I will call for clarification. She was definitely talking about checking my tubes, but also definitely said she uses saline instead of dye.

  • There is a newer procedure called a FemVue that can be used in place of an HSG. Instead of using dye and needing X-Ray, the FemVue uses saline and air to see if your Fallopian tubes are open. It's done in office and they use ultrasound to see if the air bubbles travel throughout your tubes. It is different than a saline sonogram in that it is specifically looking at your Fallopian Tubes, whereas the saline sonogram is more focused on the uterus.

  • There's two different types of contrast they can use for an HSG.  One is saline based, the other oil.  I'm thinking that is what she is referring to.

HSG checks for tube patency.  Saline sono is more for checking the "lay of the land" in your ute so to speak.

Good luck, I hope everything comes back all clear.

  • Just a note to say that my HSG was outpatient and involving x Rays. The Saline sonogram was done by my RE in his office. I barely felt the SS - couldn't believe it was over. Whereas I really had to breathe thru the HSG. I did have a blocked tube so maybe that's why it was so uncomfortable. They tried to open it by pushing more dye but it didn't work. Good luck

I'm very sensitive to diet (gluten, avoid processed foods) and environment. Have a history of inflammation and tendinitis before going off gluten in 2009.
July 2014 - RE Visit #1: Eggs look good, Endometrioma on R ovary, HSG showed blocked R tube close to ovary. DH SA normal
DX: Endometriosis probably the IF cause and gunking up tubes.  Since egg reserve is high, RE says I can wait a couple months and then get laproscopic surgery to remove endo & clear tube.  If that doesn't help then move to IVF.
Dec 2014 - Saw new RE - does not recommend surgery on tube as it isn't likely to help.  Doubts I have endometriosis.  My endometrioma shrunk to neglible size (yay!)
    Seriously considering IVF in March/April
    12/17/14 - Natural BFP!
  • Like PP mentioned, ask if they do the air bubble test.

I had to clarify this with my RE when he only mentioned the saline sonogram - he then went on to explain that right after the saline sonogram he does the FemVue (he called it an "aspiration sonogram") to check the tubes. He said it's newer technology that women find to be less painful than the HSG,...I still found it to be pretty uncomfortable but only for a quick moment!

  • thanks again all! I left a message for the nurse so hopefully they call back tomorrow!
