GTKY: wedding dresses

So since I am planning a wedding that will take place not even five months after baby girl is born, I can't go through the time honored tradition of trying on dresses. I'll be buying blindly, online and scrambling for last minute alterations of a very "forgiving" dress.

Tell me about your own dresses and what made you say "that's the one!".

Re: GTKY: wedding dresses

  • I went to David's Bridal. I already knew the style I liked, A-line. It works with my body type. I was apprehensive about strapless because I have big arms. But the dress I picked had awesome beading on the breast area and it followed throughout the dress minimally. It was very reasonable, about $550 w/ alterations.

  • I bought my dress in August 2013 for my October 2014 wedding then I ended up pregnant in August 2014. My mom had to take out the zipper, and make it a corset dress. Thankfully she knew how to do it, and did it the weekend before the wedding to allow for all the growing I'd do before the big day. I bought it at some bridal shop when I was just looking for fun, not to actually buy. But my picture isn't uploading because it's dumb. :(

  • @snowbigdeal‌ and @saltbox40‌ I love the idea of a bridesmaid dress. Never would have thought of that!
  • I wound up getting a dress I never would have picked out myself. I was pretty set on strapless, but the friend I brought along with me convinced me to try on her pick for me which had off the shoulder straps and a V-neck which turned out to be it for me! We've both been in dance our whole lives and she said everything else I picked looked kind of like a ballet dress and she wanted me to try something totally different. I was able to buy off the rack since they had the bright white I wanted and it wasn't a common size so they let me just take the sample.

DH's grad is about 3 weeks after baby is due and I'm still hoping to go. I'm not sure what to do about a dress though since it's a black tie event. Trying to decide whether I should buy ahead and go big to be altered or wait and see what I can find on short notice.

  • I can't imagine not having tried on dressed. I also bought a completely different style than I went in there to buy - I looked awful in the original style and felt so much better in a different style.

  • I ordered my dress online from BHLDN (Anthropologie's line of wedding dresses): https://www.bhldn.com/ The dress arrived in a few days, and they have free return shipping (which I didn't end up using because I kept the dress). I took the dress to a local seamstress and had it taken in a little at the waist and everything worked out great.
  • My wedding dress situation was a shit show. I bought a beautiful dress from Priscilla of Boston 7 months before my wedding. They told me that it would take 6 months for the dress to come in, so I knew we were cutting it close with the dress getting in and alterations and 2 weeks before my wedding, my dress wasn't ready...they told me it was going to be another month before they got my dress. So I ended up buying a Maggie Sottero gown off the rack and had the alterations finished two days before my wedding. It wasn't really what I wanted, I was in such a time crunch and felt really pressured. Thankfully, I was refunded in full from Priscilla of Boston for messing up my order.

My dress "picked me" on DH's birthday, 2 weeks after we got engaged. It was the 3rd dress I tried on. I knew it was "the one" but I still insisted on trying on others.. so I went to another store, but ended up just leaving and going back and getting my dress. I wish I could wear it all the time, LOVED my dress. It's a Casablanca and the store had just gotten it in, it was waiting for me ;)

My dress was aqua !! And I went with strapless but I did gain weight before the day so breathing issues on the day was not so much fun, but it was a dress that came in white so was recomended as it was the only one she had in my size , but then I wanted color so ... Mine was zip up and wish it had been lace up then I probably could've got away with the little bit of extra weight (stress eating) i put on.
  • I got my dress at a bridal boutique in Sunnyvale, CA. My grandparents were too sick to make the trip up to the Pacific NW for the wedding, so it was a great way to get them involved and spend some time with them.

I LOVED this dress from the minute I put it on. I just felt like it emphasized what I wanted it to emphasize, and made me feel beautiful. With alterations, everything came to around $1,500. It was more than we'd planned on spending, but we ended up not doing wedding favors so it all worked out. I had to get alterations because I lost 15 pounds between buying the dress and the wedding, but they did a great job!

You'll find something that you love.
  • I knew I wanted a lace mermaid dress with cap sleeves. Tried on about 30 and someone suggested I try something different. Everyone cried when I tried it on so I knew it was the one even if it wasn't what I imagined. Just find something that makes you feel special :). Good luck!

This is me! I'm due April 6th and getting married October 3rd! I'm just buying a dress that I know is flattering on me pre-pregnancy. I'm lucky because my old neighbor has made and altered wedding dresses her entire life and says she will make any and all alterations I need for me for free :) This is the dress I'm getting.

  • Randy from "Say Yes to the Dress" helped me choose my dress. Such a fun experience! I went with a style (lace, low back) that I had never thought I would choose. Dresses totally do look different on than they do on a hanger!

I went to many stores and tried on tons of dresses. I finally found this one and it fit me perfectly as is, and I was able to buy the sample for a much lower price and therefore able to afford it. Very plain, but had two flat bows on the back on the bands.
