Gift Ideas - Seven Year Old

I am trying to get ahead of holiday shopping this year. My seven year old (first grade) cannot articulate anything that she wants. She doesn't really play with toys like Littlest Pet Shop, etc. I bought her a Keva set, but beyond that, total loss.

She was a Power Ranger last Halloween, Dorothy from Wizard of Oz this year. She loves math. Has a short attention span. VERY messy with poor judgment, so anything with paint, etc. is a bad idea.

I think her "big gift" is going to be a full on soccer goal for the backyard so she can practice independently (we don't have a wooden fence or a windowless brick wall so she cannot kick up against anything).

Help me out.  I know it's early November, but this is stressing me out.

  • My 6 year old wants the gorilla gym for kids.

We will probably also get him some construction type stuff.  He loves to build.

  • What are your thoughts on electronics - because there are some great math / puzzle games that you can get for consoles, i-pods etc. And they're great to help build an attention span.

    Failing that - Lego :x

Both my kids a similar to your daughter in interests and they live for Lego!

British born, emigrated to Canada 2006
  • What about games (board, card, etc) that the whole family can partake in with her. Books that might interest here (there is a math series that is cute Sir Cumference.... ), science experiment kits (some kids into math love science), stuff to go with the soccer goal, music she likes etc. Good luck
  • Does she play with dolls or does she like to collect?  If so maybe she would like an American Girl doll.  My daughter is 9 and will be 10 in January and she loves these dolls and they have soccer outfits, cool clothes, accessories etc.  That she can choose and grow with and they also have really great books for each doll.  They are lengthy but perfect for that transition into chapter books the website is www.americangirl.com and depending on your city they have a store as well.
  • Here's a great list I've been working off of: https://www.modernparentsmessykids.com/gift-guide-2013-top-toys-for-building-stem-skills

Also, you could keep it low-key this year.  Maybe focus on experiences (Nutcracker, baking cookies for the neighbors, volunteering somewhere etc.) and then do the Want/Need/Wear/Read thing for gifts?

  • For my 1st grader and her 3 yo sister, I was thinking that santa might bring them www.fortmagic.com.  My 3 yo wanted a replacement tent for the cheapo target one that had fallen apart.  I didn't really want to buy another cheapo one.  So when I found this fort building kit, I thought it would be fun for the girls to build their own creations.  And frankly the 1st grader will build and the little one will play in it.
  • You guys are awesome. I still feel a little stuck - and I think it's that I want to get her things that won't work for her (like American Girl - her AG doll has gum in her hair and blue marker on the back of her neck and we can only find one shin guard and no underwear or Legos (We have 80% of the pieces to each set. Super insane making.  Or the fort set - we have something similar and she has lost most of the connectors).  I feel like such a crappy mom at times like this - my oldest can keep track of pieces of things, if we give her a system.  My middle?  She has no ability to organize anything ever, except in really weird ways.  I asked her to get a white tshirt and she removed all the shirts from the drawer and placed them around the perimeter of her room so she would not have to open a drawer or look under shirts to find the one she wants.  She just has a different kind of brain than I do.

On the list for sure are the Sir Cumference books (so cute!) and soccer jersey if they make it in toddler sizes.
