Hi, I am 35 and this is a surprise baby. We thought we were one and done but someone knew something we did not know. :)
I am beyond nervous about the additional testing that goes with 35. Plus, I have a career and i am scared of how all the juggling will play out.
You all are so awesome because I have read alot of your posts and you all know your stuff. My 8 week appointment is on Thursday and I would really like to go there being prepared.
Is there only two screenings that are non-invasive DNA and NT? What are the invasive tests? Amnio and cvs.. what other tests are there? Sorry for all thquestions but I am overwhelmed by google.
Thank you in advance

Re: intro and questions

  • I would start out with the DNA (marketed under Harmony, Maternity 21 , etc) and Nt scan. This especially true if there isn't a high risk of genetic disorders on either side. DNA is 99 % effective and will be replacing a lot of testing as soon as the price is cheaper. They can't do it before 10 weeks, won't be enough of baby's DNA in your blood. You will get an inconclusive result, will have to do it over and wait again. Good luck and congrats!

  • I asked my HR doc this when I went a couple weeks ago because I'm 36 and high risk already because of a late loss I had in 2011 so I wasn't sure if that meant additional testing.  She said no.  She said they would likely do additional non-stress tests in my last trimester but that would probably be the only thing age related.  I don't do any of the genetic testing. I never have.. with any of my babies. We are very low risk in general and they can't treat any of the diagnosis so I prefer not to test for it. I know a lot of women disagree with that but that's just me.

  • Congrats and Welcome!!
This is our 1st pregnancy being over 35 (I am 36). And just like with our other pregnancies, we opted out of all testing. It is just something you have to decide for yourself. Each of the Drs I have seen this time around didn't act like it was a big deal whether I had the tests done or not. It is all a personal choice.

The additional testing for me so far has only happened at that first trimester screen.  They added a single blood draw for the non-invasive DNA test and that was it.  I am high risk for other reasons, but am otherwise treated the same as other less risky pregnancies until I get to about 34 weeks.  I didn't have to worry about the Amnio or CVS because the DNA test came back low risk.  Take a deep breath, there is plenty of time and I know in the beginning it seems like a whirlwind of new information but it slows down.

  • Hello! I'm 36, and this is my first baby. 12 weeks yesterday. I'm super excited, but yes all the testing for over 35 is nerve wrecking. I hope everything is well with my baby. I took the genetic testing last week, and I will get the detail ultrasound on the 19th.
  • Welcome and congrats :)

My tests so far:  BP, US, and urine test every appointment; baseline blood work; HPV and other STD tests, carrier testing based on your ethnic background; NIPT; quad screen (for Spina Bifida that the NIPT doesn't look for, also screens for some stuff NIPT does test for); anatomy scan; diabetes test (scheduled); and I might be offered a fetal non-stress test at some point too.  All these tests are noninvasive to the fetus.  If I had tested positive on the carrier, NIPT or quad, I suspect I would've been offered Amnio or CVS to confirm.  Hope this helps.
  • Thank you all so much.
  • If you are 35, there is really very little that's different from an "under 35" pregnancy. You will be offered various testing options, but it's not like you are super high risk unless there are other factors in your history. My doctor is not routinely offering the new blood tests yet at all (i.e. Harmony, Materniti21). I would have done the first trimester screen (i.e. NT Scan) but it was not covered by my insurance. I did the Quad Screen blood draw again as I have with every pregnancy--no big deal. You will probably have a slightly better (level II) ultrasound. It's no problem to manage with a job--not any more than any other pregnancy. :) Good luck! Congratulations!
