Pedicure good or bad?

So my husband and I are first time parents. I am really laid back and he is constantly racing and worrying. His recent thing is he doesn't want me to get pedicures anymore because of it possibly causing me to go in to labor. He read it some where that pedicures can induce labor... Is this a thing?

Re: Pedicure good or bad?

  • I just had one two days ago and no preterm labor for me! It was amazing... Treat yourself :)

  • Pedicures are really really good. :D

  • Like PP said, there are accupressure points that can trigger contractions.... however, people can do it on purpose without successfully starting up, so I think it would be very unlikely that it might happen unintentionally. I had a spa refuse to let me get a massage in the first trimester for the same reason.....

  • I would stay away from it just to be safe. It feels like heaven ofcourse but they might accidentally press nerves to trigger your labour...

I say from my personal experience - when i was almost 8 days overdue with my first - i went for a foot massage and my water broke that night ... although i did tell them to intentially press the nerves which will help trigger my labor

  • Get the damned pedicure. If you really want to be extra cautious, just tell them no heavy rubbing of your feet.

  • enjoy your pedicure.

Like PP have said the concern is pressure points. If you're concerned, let the person doing your pedicure know you're pregnant, they'll be extra gentle or modify the massage.

  • I haven't been able to reach my feet for awhile and I hate long toe nails. I've been getting pedicures every few weeks since I was about week 20. It is extremely unlikely they would push the right acupuncture points to induce labor. Get the pedicure.

  • Pedicures are amazing. You should get them as often as possible.

  • Supposedly like PPs said, there are pressure points in your feet and ankles that could cause contractions. I honestly don't think it would actually cause labor unless the baby is ready to come (but some of us can probably try it when we're 40+ weeks and then let everyone know how it turns out).

If your H is so concerned about it, you can just tell them to go easy on the massage part of the pedicure. I've gotten 2 in pregnancy with no issues.

I had one with ds3, it didn't send me into labor. In fact I went 11 more days.

  • I got regular pedicures through all of my first three pregnancies, every 2-3 weeks, and never once went into labor. Or had a contraction. Or anything. Tell your hubs to relax! And enjoy the pedicure! Being pg is miserable and uncomfortable in so many ways, why deprive yourself of one indulgence we CAN have that makes you feel better?!?!!

  • Pedicures is fine. If you go to one that offers "reflexology" do NOT request it unless you are within 2 weeks of your due date. Reflexology focuses on pressure points and if a specific nerve is hit then it can triggar labor. Most spas will refuse to do reflexology if they are advised properly that you are expecting.
  • Also note there are pressure points throughout our bodies. If a regular pedicure was unsafe so would manicures and massages. As I said prior just avoid requesting for "reflexology" to be done.
  • Just went this weekend and got a pedicure since I can't reach my toes anymore. It felt amazing! When she was massaging my feet I did get a little worried because I'm super paranoid, but everything was fine. No contractions or anything. Honestly to start uterine contractions you probably have to press on the exact points for an extended period of time. If you are really worried you could tell them to skip the massage though.

  • I have gotten many pedicures throughout this pregnancy.  I just tell them that I'm pregnant and ask them not to massage my feet because of the pressure points (even though I'm not sure this is really a thing- but I would worry about it if I didn't say something).  As other people have said, I've never heard of anyone going into pre-term labor because of a pedicure!
  • I have regularly gone for pedicures during both my pregnancies and no labor for me. I went at 39 weeks with DD and it did not bring on labor.
  • I have been contemplating getting a pedi, but since I still can reach my toes (super long arms and legs) I think I'll give myself one last one then go in for pretty holiday toes after Thanksgiving. In July for my last pedi for my sister's wedding I was nervous about the massage but really it is a non issue. Enjoy your pedi!!!

  • ah this thread made me smile...thanks ladies :)

get a pedicure, its amazing and necessary IMO

reflexology, as others have mentioned, MAY send you into labor if the person is trained to press the exact right spots.....but thats a BIG MAY!

I had reflexology done in 39th week last time in hopes that it would start labor, twice that week I think actually lol...my water broke at 40 weeks 1 day, I don't think the reflexology had ANYTHING to do with it.

Anything you do after the 40th week can't be proven to have started labor because at that point labor could happen at any time naturally...

This... I trained as a massage therapist and we weren't allowed to give massages for the first Tri, but after that, hands, feet, legs everything was fair game.  There are pressure points around the ankles but it has to be more of a constant pressure on one point, then a sweeping massage up and down the legs.

There were 0 signs of labour after walking for miles and doing all possible exercises and i was very afraid to get induced by medicines... So I went for a foot massage ... But maybe it came on its own ... I dont know. I was a first time mum and pretty scared of meds...Sorry to upset some of you ..

  • Thank you all so much! I am greatful for all of your input... My husband worries about everything, it's cute but annoying at times lol. I am happy he cares so much some stuff he just throws me for a loop!
  • If labour was so easy to induce, I promise you that no woman ever would be overdue. The fact is - except for medical inductions there really isn't a fail - safe method to bring on a baby's birth. They come when they are ready. Have the pedicure. Go for that walk. Scrub that floor (if you really really feel that you must). And relax...
  • Foot massages have been known to cause labor not pedicures. The issue I've heard with pedicures is the possible infection from using tools that weren't sterilized or foot baths that aren't properly washed. There are clean places to get a pedicure with no worries.
  • Am I the only one who doesn't like my feet touched?!?

  • ah jealous! I wish my husband would rub my feet. He won't touch feet (to be fair I'm not a fan either but I would rub his if he had a long day or I was feeling really nice) I was really looking forward to foot massages when pregnant but learned last time that even pregnancy doesn't give me a pass with him...Sooo instead he has to deal with me getting pedicures more than usual for the next few months :)
  • My husband gives me a foot massage almost every night and I don't plan on having him stop. *runs away*

Mine rubs the base of my head, my neck and shoulders, and down my back every night while he reads before bed. I am absolutely addicted! There's no way I am letting him stop once baby is born.

  • Oh, and I am going to go get a pedicure today. I will let you all know if I go into pre-term labor, but I am not the least bit concerned! :bz

  • Get your pedicure! The acupressure points/technique that "can" help induce labor is really different than a regular pedicure. Funny story though last time I got a pedicure I was maybe 12-16 weeks along and mentioned it to the lady doing the pedicure (she asked if we had kids). She abruptly leaned up and turned off my massage chair and said "no massage for you until later" in a scolding way! She obviously felt that the massage chair was a threat to my pregnancy, she had no problem rubbing my feet though.

  • I am reading this with my feet in the water at my local Venice Nail Salon. So I say "good". Oh, and I ordered the extended message.
