Question for MSPI momma's

We cut out dairy and soy on Dr recommendation and he was a completely different baby. It was wonderful. We discussed trying to add soy back in to see if he is not sensitive to soy. So we did that this weekend. Big mistake! Baby was screaming in agony for 2 hours last night, wouldn't bf, couldn't poo. It was awful. And broke my heart.

Question is this: should I use my freezer stash for the next few days (in hours to get the soy ouy of his system faster) and pump and label or continue bf as usual?

Eta: he is a well fed 13 lb 10 week old. Even when he was getting sick all the time, Dr wasn't concerned about weight/nutrition

Re: Question for MSPI momma's

  • Sorry you're going through this, the whole MSPI business is really tough. Similar to @casey78, I usually just continued breastfeeding. However we did have one incident where DD was spitting up large volumes 5-6 times after nursing after an accidental soy flour exposure. Because of the severity of her reaction I chose to pump and dump for 24 hours. That gave her some time to recover and she did fine after that short break.

If you do choose to pump, I like your idea of labeling and freezing. That will be handy for the future when you want to retry soy again. You can offer her frozen milk with soy in it without having to contaminate your milk supply.

I'm sorry. :( I don't know the "right" answer as that stuff takes time to get out of our system. I've had a couple accidental exposures and just pushed through. I'd probably see how LO does today. If still no good, you could use stash or alternate nursing and stash (keep pumped as LO might be fine with it later). I'm curious what others will say.
I would do the same...wait to see how it goes today.  DD had an immediate reaction after nursing when I tried to add wheat in for the first time, but was totally fine after.
  • Thanks ladies. He's been really fussy and his poo is back to being yucky, but so far is better than last night. Hopefully it will just get better as the day goes on. But I'm going to bring milk from my stash for the 4 hour car trip tomorrow (we were planning on waiting until next week but didn't realize there was soy in something I ate). He's also been extra sleepy and snuggly today.

Hope your baby does ok on the road trip! Your original question was going to be my question too.
  • Sorry so late, I didn't see the page. I also just kept nursing whenever I had an accidental exposure, but my DS never had quite that severe of a reaction. I like the idea of trying a 24-hr pump and dump to give LO a break, as long as pumping works well for you and you won't run the risk of a supply drop. But it sounds like your LO is doing better - I hope so!
