Traveling with baby

We will be traveling to NM next month for a week and then I will be going to Seattle with DS for a week and a half in Jan and I am curious where the heck does baby sleep?! And what to do for bedtime routine? Since he'll be in a new place I'll probably nurse or rock him to sleep instead of putting him down awake unless he becomes a champ at it by then. I guess he should just go in bed with me but what have you done when traveling?

Re: Traveling with baby

  • We've done a fair bit of traveling.  We bring the P&P, but he hates it so it's usually a bit rough.

Keep the routine as close as you can.  Sometimes we can't do a bath, but we'll do a warm wipedown in it's place, stuff like that.

We had lots of extra wake-ups (like @MLC912 I thank DH for most of them), and I was reluctant to let him cry even for a minute or two to resettle since there were other people around, so that probably didn't help either.

  • Oh yeah, flying is different.  We're flying in December, but fortunately I think I'll be able to borrow everything from a carseat to a portable crib from a family friend who runs an in-home daycare.

  • Are you staying in a hotel or in the same room as LO? Our LO sleeps in his room, so our biggest problem is that when LO sees DH and I in the room when he wakes up, he wants to party, no matter what the time. We rigged up a divider curtain (binder clips, hairties or pushpins and a sheet) that blocked LO's view of us when he was napping/sleeping in the crib and it really helped!

I second the try and keep routine as close as possible, but if you can't do that, at least try replicate as much of his normal sleeping space as possible. For us, that was the sheet, sleep sacks and his sound machine. Even if bedtime was way later, that was a huge help!

  • We are driving to NM so will probably bring the PNP but will be flying to Seattle so hopefully I can borrow one there!! Thanks ladies
  • A thing seldom talked about is there are companies all over the US to rent baby gear from. We once rented a PNP, high chair, stroller, and tub of toys to stay at my inlaws. They delivered and picked it up.

  • Whenever we stayed in a hotel with our DS as a baby, we got a complimentary pack n play from them.  This is what we're going to do with DD next month when we go to Florida. I brought a sheet the first time, but ended up just using theirs. They wash it and I didn't want to worry about our sheet disappearing when the room was cleaned.

We just got back from a trip where we drove (just 5 hours) and then spent a couple nights with family. For that we brought our mini travel pack n play with us (Graco travel lite mini pack n play) for DD. She slept great. DS slept with us in the bed and that went surprisingly well also. Normally when he sleeps with us he doesn't sleep well at all.

  • We flew with a Pak and play and it didn't cost any extra to count it as baggage- but we flew Southwest, so it was free at the time. If you have to pay $50 each way to bring it with you, you'd be better off buying a cheap one when you get to your destination.

  • I would keep the bedtime as routine as as possible. We struggle every time we travel since LO will only sleep in the PNP for 30-45 min increments despite having the same routine. Bed sharing isn't an option so that makes things tough. I agree with @hlm184‌ about being reluctant to let LO cry, which adds a whole new level of stress to the already shitty situation. It's awful and makes me not want to travel anymore. Goodluck to you.
  • Are you visiting family or friends? If so, try borrowing a pack n play from someone! We put the word out on FB that we needed to borrow one when flying for thanksgiving and was able to borrow one from a friend.

  • In NM we will be driving and stay with family so we will just take our PNP. But in Jan we will be flying to Seattle so my dad can donate my cousin a kidney so I may see if the hotel has one we can use. My cousin will have a car seat for us.
