Wine recommendations

I'm going out of town to visit our friends this weekend and we are staying with them. I wanted to bring a bottle of wine as a present to thank them. They like red wines. We have a Trader Joes here and wanted to buy the wine there. Does anyone have any recommendations? I am normally a Rum girl so I am clueless about wine.

My sommelier friend told me Layer Cake primovito is a good one for around $10.

Our trader joes has an employee/wine guy hang out in the wine section on Friday afternoons. He is always happy to give out recommendations. I like to give $10-20 bottles of Pinot Noir.
