Storing breastmilk on ice

My husband and I are going away for a weekend for our 5th wedding anniversary. I will have to pump while I'm gone as LO will just be 6 months at that time and we're definitely not done BFing. I thought I could just use the mini bar fridge to store the BM I pump but my husband said the hotel has this weight thing in the fridge that charges your room automatically if anything is disturbed, so we don't want to risk getting charged $8 for a bottle of water because I tried to stick some milk in there.

We can request an additional fridge for our room but it's $30 a night. (We're going for 2 nights). That just seems ridiculous to me! I know they sat with a freezer pack BM lasts 24 hours, but if I continually refresh the ice do you think I could keep the BM fresh I'm a cooler for the weekend until I can get it home? Or should I just plan to dump what I pump on Friday night and Saturday morning because it will be on ice too long?

Thanks!

Re: Storing breastmilk on ice

  • I have never heard of the weight thing before! Sounds a little like an urban legend to me (but hey, I could be totally wrong). I would call the hotel and ask. I mean I am sure people use it for other things. When DD was a young toddler and we stayed overnight we would often bring a 1/2 gallon of milk with us. She took a sippy of it right before bed, and when she got up. Also we stored baby food in hotel fridges with no charges.

  • Thanks all! I am planning on calling them to ask about the fridge, but I just wanted to know about the ice thing, so I could ask them about their ice machine if the answer is "no" from them. I'm hoping we will be able to use the fridge, because it would suck to have to dump all that milk (I rarely pump anymore, I used to EP for the first couple of months so I'm kind of over pumping).

  • When I was a kid, we had a sailboat that slept 6 (there were 4 kids and my parents). We would take the boat on 2 week cruises around one of the great lakes where we lived each summer. The boat was equipped with a deep cooler that we would purchase ice for at each port, and it would slowly melt and drip out into the lake until we got to the next port to buy new ice. We kept regular milk, meat, everything that needed to be refrigerated in that thing and never had any issues. I'm sure having the BM on fresh ice all weekend would be completely fine if the fridge thing doesn't work out. Enjoy the trip!

  • You should find out how cool the fridge gets. Sometimes it is less cool than a fridge and just keeps contents "cooler", if that is the case I wouldn't store breast milk in there
