Hi...and heeeeellllp!

Hi...I'm a dirty lurker...I have one precious LO, a couple of rescue dogs, a couple of step kids, a husband and a full time job. I like to drink wine and eat Cheetos in bed when my husband travels, which has made me a little fatter than my pants would like.  I try to be cool and when that gets too exhausting, I revert back to quoting How I Met Your Mother and laughing when people say "duty". My shoes are almost always inappropriate for the event, as 4 inch heels are ridiculous in general but I love them anyways. But mostly, I'm a mom who loves her little girl.

So, after that lengthy intro, I need some help. I struggle with health anxiety in general (I see a therapist and am on meds) but it is so much worse in relation to LO. For instance, I found a swollen lymph node in her groin and am now terrified she has Lymphoma. It makes me feel sick and I know my fear will adversely affect her as she grows old enough to understand. Anyone have any experience with this? Any suggestions on how I can tame my crazy?

  • Hi- I am sorry you are dealing with this.  I can totally relate.  I had PPA/ PPD after DD was born and most of my anxiety revolves around her health and well being (and also the health and well being of my other loved ones.)

You say you are on meds, but maybe you need your dosage re-valuated or a different medication if you don't feel like you are getting the relief you need.

    GL!

  • Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I can't blame the crazy on PPD...my daughter is 18 months old. I guess I'm still struggling to sort out the minor issues from the real reasons for concern. Google, as always, has just scared the hell out of me.

Oh well cool. I figured the PPA/PPD reasoning had a time limit. Maybe I'll just use that til she's 18 or so. :)
  • Love wine, love how I met your mother, hello! I too am in the same anxiety/OCD category with my kids. It was the worst with my first and manifested in post partum depression and such. I swore I was going to go nuts. I now have a 3 week old who was born a preemie and just had to stop bf for the same issues.

The best thing I can offer is probably the hope that time will ease it a bit. Also, make sure you take your meds! As my kids got older and I had more, I had to force myself to remember that kids get sick, they get hurt, and it isn't always serious. But mostly the better safe than sorry clause also helped. My pediatrician was wonderful. He also helped me through it. Basically, if you just can't shake whatever it is you are dwelling on, call. A lot of doctors have nurses you can talk too. They can direct you from there.

I will be honest, 3 kids and 11 years later I do still struggle and sometimes being a parent feels like the most frightening thing ever. I was hysterical and thought my world was ending when my (at the time) 2 year old broke his leg. It turns out our kids really are pretty resilient.

Just hang in there and don't rule out therapy. It can be helpful as well. I'm really really sorry you are struggling with this. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy!
