California Dreamin'

I'm pretty sure we have a few A14 ladies from California so I'm hoping they can help me out. I have a friend getting married in Malibu in March.  My husband and I will be attending and neither one of us has ever been to California. We are looking for some fun things to do while we are out there.  We are planning to be out there for four days but maybe longer depending on the exciting things "we must do" while we are out there.

Suggestions?

Re: California Dreamin'

  • How far do you want to travel from Malibu? California is huge and the traffic can double or triple your drive times to some places.

  • Probably no more than an hours drive
  • I second @RedDawnsRevenge‌ with the suggestion of The Getty and Universal. It's also fun to catch a show taping at a TV studio if you get a chance.

@RedDawsRevenge list is pretty good, although there are a few that are not under an hour with traffic.

I definitely recommend the Getty. There is also the Getty Villa (which is all greek and roman artifacts) in the Palisades but you need to make advance reservations to go there.

    Eating suggestions in Malibu:
Ollie's Duck and Dive (my favorite-go for a beer and lunch)
    Malibu Farm (on the pier)
Malibu Seafood (best seafood-informal picnic style-please don't be a dumb tourist and jaywalk PCH)
    Vintage Grocers
The Sunset (on the beach near Point Dume)
Marmalade (meh- but good for celebrity watching breakfast/brunch-Saturday/Sunday if that excites u)
Lily's (hole in the wall local mexican food-get tge carne asada plate)
Moonshadows (get a booth outside for a late dinner by the DJ for good people watching)
Nobu (my other favorite-try to get a reservation-order the yellowtail with jalepeno)

There are a ton of wine tasting places and vinyards up Kanan Dume and it's a beautiful drive (you can also take it into Westlake Village and do a spa day at The Four Seasons. There is also a brand new In and Out Burger nearby (and there is a Habit right off the 101 at Kanan).

Cross Creek for shopping (or window shopping)

    Hiking:
    Escondido Falls Trail
    Zuma Ridge/Canyon Trail (easy)
Point Dume Natural Reserve (just a mile)
(There's a lot more but these are off the top of my head)

You could go vintage shopping up Topanga Canyon and eat at Inn at the Seventh Ray

I also think going into Santa Monica or Venice would be fun for a tourist-plus it's off season so it won't be gridlock although there is a lot of construction that way on PCH.

  • Also look for Angelyne (hot pink corvette) or Barbie jogger sighting when driving up PCH. If you spot them you will know-trust me.
