Multiples

Introducing myself, and a quick question

Hello hello!

I have been lurking here since my first singleton pregnancy, and now am here because I am having twins! I am so excited to be here with you ladies, but know that we have a long journey and am nervous about the higher risks of this pregnancy. I'm looking forward to getting to know you all, and learning from you!

My SO and I live outside of DC, he's a geo-spacial engineer, and I'm a business owner. We both went through IVF in our previous marriages, and thought it would take much longer to get pregnant for us.

Since I have a history of loss, and infertility, I had early ultrasounds. We found out just before 5 weeks that we had two sacs, and last Friday we saw two perfect little heartbeats!

When I  went through IF testing in my first marriage, and found out that I hyper-ovulate. I knew multiples were always a possibility, but it's still sinking in that its a reality now. They are di/di, and we assume, since I hyper-ovulate, that they are fraternal. My Dr, however, thinks they might be identical b/c they have been super close together the whole time, are measuring the same, and have the same heart rate.

My two questions are:

Any insight on the connection between heart rate and identical vs fraternal?

When did you start seeing a MFM?

Here's our little beans, it's hard to see, but there is a yolk sac and fetal pole in each sac :)

TIA!

  • Congrats! I am having di/Di twins and their heartbeats are almost always the same and their weight has been almost exactly the same up until this past week.

  • My di/di girls always had the same exact heart beat and were the same exact measurement my whole pregnancy. Mine were spontaneous and we had a suspicion they may be identical but they really really are not at all not even close lol Now they are about 4 lbs apart and don't look a thing alike.

That said - my girlfriend in real life had di/di girls and learned through testing a few months later that hers are identical. Her dr. predicted this because of the way they were "presenting" very close to one another.

  • Congrats! I'm outside of DC too! I don't have any insight on the heartbeats question, but I'm not seeing anyone with MFM until my 20 week ultrasound which will be at Fairfax hospital! My practice works in conjunction with them for multiples. Which hospital do you want to deliver at? I would recommend Fairfax just because, well, they are the best in the area.

  • Mine are di/di and I'm putting my money on fraternal since we saw two corpus luteal cysts. But until much later in pg they measured the same and had very close HRs.

The OB I was referred to is a MFM so I've been seeing her since 12 weeks.

  • @greks84 Hello Neighbor!!

I'm delivering at Fairfax for sure! I was planning on Reston, but now that we are working with twins, I'm switching OBs so I can delivery at Inova Fairfax. I feel so fortunate that we have this amazing hospital in our backyard!

  • Thank you everyone! I did have a super early scan (3weeks ish) and they told me I had a cyst that was "sometimes associated with pregnancy" and there was only one. That's pretty interesting @Rayray007

My boys were measuring the same right down to their femur lengths all the way through the third trimester, with the exception of my very first scan where they measured two days apart (at 6w2d and 6w4d) - but they are absolutely fraternal. Different blood types, different eye colours, different heights, different faces, etc. Ditto on the cysts, too - fraternals will always have one CLC of their own each (we actually had three, so I'm glad I didn't end up with triplets...) - a single cyst is more likely to mean that only one egg was released.

What seems weird, to me, though, is the little blacked out gap between the two sacs in your ultrasound picture, almost as though there is an opening between the placentas. It's probably just a shadow, but did the doctor point out anything about that? I was having ultrasounds every two to three weeks due to other factors, and I never saw anything that made it look like our boys had any connected space between them - the placental barrier was very obvious until late into the pregnancy when everything thinned out.

  • @Rynleigh I'm not sure what's up with the "opening" there. On the screen, it looked like the membrane was complete from top to bottom, and the tech didn't say anything about it being open.

I go in next Wednesday for another scan, so I will be able to ask about that then .

  • Congrats! Its kind of odd that that is why your ob suspected possible identical and didn't mention any other reasons he would suspect it... but anyway my di/di b/g twins have always had very similar to the same HR. They also have measured the same pretty much my entire pregnancy.

@GirPipley‌ Yes! Exactly the same way I feel! I was going to deliver at Reston but when I found out about the twins, Fairfax was the only way to go! Top rated NICU, doctors and MFM program. Are your docs putting you on bed rest at 26 weeks? Mine are but they say if I'm not having any complications I can do a work only bed rest, meaning I'm allowed to work for 8 hours but have to be in bed the rest of the day. This is mandatory for twins at the practice I'm going to. You?

    Edited for spelling error.

  • @Greks84 I haven't seen my new OB yet, I go in tomorrow for my first appointment with them, it's with Capital Women's Care.  I have no idea about bed rest, but boo, that would be rough. We have a 18 month old and 4 year old, so I'm not sure how that would work out.

I own a business, and am doing about 15-25 hours a week of actual hands on work right now,. SO and I have decided that by 26 weeks, I will hire another employee to cover those hours so I don't have to work anymore. I'll just deal with payroll and scheduling, which is simple to do while sitting on my arse.

  • I have di/di twin girls growing over here! No concrete idea if they are identical or not as my fertility doctor seemed REALLY surprised that there were two babies in there. Ha! They have been very close on growth the whole time. My OB is also Capital Womens' Care, my MFM is Greater Washington Fetal Medicin, and I too will be delivering at Fairfax. :) I am 35 Weeks +1 and so far no bed rest for me.... which I am greatful for because I have a 4 year old boy to care for. My 4 year old was delivered at Fairfax too.... top notch hospital that has gotten even better in the last 4'years. :)

  • @diz1313 That's great that you have made it to 35 weeks with no bed rest! I am so glad you enjoyed your experience at Fairfax with your son! I had DD in Virginia Beach, but I have been to several events and meetings at Fairfax and have been really impressed.

I'm excited to see CWC tomorrow and get set up with them for the next 6-7 months!
