STMs, how did you arrange

I've washed the load of baby clothes that we've received from our shower and I've hung up all of the outfits that will fit him in a year, but I'm having a difficult time arranging the dresser.

My sister said that with her second she decided to arrange the drawers by age rather than outfit types. She said when she had her first, she did it by outfit type and months later found outfits that she never put my nephew in because she didn't come across them. He was now too big at that point.

What do you gals think?

  • I organized by size too.

  • By size.

I've only unpacked the 0-3 and 3-6 mos clothes in the dresser. I have sleepwear in one drawer and pants/shirts in another for each. I have all of the larger sizes arranged by size still in storage.

  • By size. I only put what size the baby is currently in in the drawers I'm using, keeping the bigger stuff in a separate drawer, and then move it out, and the new stuff in when needed.

  • Drawers and tubs organized by size.

I say tubs because I got a lot of hand-me-downs from a cousin who has a kid about a year older and a crazy MiL who buys clothes tons of sizes up at times (like I have stuff in size 8 already?!?!  O_o), and DD1's baby clothes all went into tubs by size as she outgrew them in case we had another (and obviously we are haha).

  • Maybe I had a tonne of clothes for DD, but I had one dresser that was all the clothes she first the time. One drawer for onsies, ones for sleepers, ones for pants and shirts, one for sweaters and jackets ones for hats, socks etc. Nice dresses were hung. The rest of her clothes were organized in bins and stored in her closet or the basement.
  • Did you ladies ever come across clothes that specified a certain size but there is no way in hell that that was it? I have some NB oneies that match a 0-3 month when held up together!
It drives me crazy because obviously put it in with the 0-3, but then I question it. haha geeeezzeeeee

  • If you get any Gerber brand, you will find that they run 1-2 sizes smaller than anything else.  And I usually bought up a size at Old Navy.

  • I only put Newborn and 0-3 months in the drawers at first. After outgrowing 0-3, I only keep the size that fits out. Everything else is stored by size.

For my girls, I didn't have many NB jammies, so I kept all the jammies in one drawer - NB on the left, 0-3 on the right. Then, I had all the NB clothes in one drawer and 0-3 in another, with any overflow in the sock/accessory drawer.

For baby boy, drawer space will be more limited, so I may just put his NB stuff out at first.

lol, that was baby #1's drawer, when I was a FTM and home for a month waiting for my due date and plenty of time to roll onesies.

  • I agree @ICarriedAWatermelon‌ and @tripletoe‌.

I'll go into detail on how we needed up organizing her clothes in a way that really worked for us. Feel free to skip.

We had a lot of hand-me-downs as well as new clothes. I kept all of the NB and 0-3 months out in her dresser and closet. As she grew out of them, I put them in a storage tub labeled with that size (stored in the basement) and brought in the next sizes.

Her dresser had a drawer for onesies (with stacks for short sleeves and long sleeves), a drawer for pants, a drawer for shirts, a drawer for footie pajamas, a drawer for leg warmers (thank you hip dysplasia) and socks with a divider in the center to keep them separate, and one for her sleep sacks.

The changing table has some drawers so the top is dedicated to wipes, diapers, aquaphor, etc. While the others have extra swaddle blankets, crib sheets, changing table sheets and changing table covers and in them.

    Jan 15  NOV siggy challenge:

  • By size, not just size on the tag. Some brands 3m is the same as others 6m and so on. I haven't washed anything yet because of dust collecting on them before the baby comes. Even in a seal container the clothes won't smell fresh and clean after a couple more months.

With my first, I had everything prewashed and hung nicely in the closet with onesies and sleepers in the dresser before she was born. Then soon after she was born, everything got thrown in the drawer if it was something she fit into (aside from a few nice dresses). It wasn't worth my time/effort while trying to adjust to a new baby to hang everything back up nicely. The clothes were either laid flat or just folded in half to fit.
  • I must have a lot of baby clothes (actually, there is no question about this)... because I only have the clothes out that fit him at the time, and they take up all available room in a dresser, a tallboy and a closet.

As he got bigger, I swapped out the outgrown stuff for the bigger clothes. Why have 12 mo stuff out now?
Same for us. For DD, I had (and still have) pants in one drawer and shirts/onesies in another, pajamas in another, socks, etc. Dresses and an assortment of other items are in the closet. Clothes that are too big (and as they become too small) are organized in bins in the closet. This LO has less clothes so far, but I'll plan to follow basically the same system.

This. Current stuff in the dresser, organized by type (drawer for socks, PJs, pants, "undershirt" onesies, diapers, etc). The next sizes are in a pile in the closet somewhere and I replace items as they get too small.
    DD#1 (6), DD#2 (4), DD#3 (0)
  • I only washed 0-3 months sizes and left the rest in bins and then took them out and washed them as DD grew out of the smaller stuff. I organized the drawers by type- onesies, jammies, socks, etc.
