Clogged tear duct

Hello! Is anyone else's LO still having issues with a clogged tear duct? Mine has had it since birth and it's still going on. At her 6 mo. appt the pedi said if it didn't clear up by 9 mo. we would be referred to a specialist for treatment. We have been doing the massages but they seem to make it worse. I did breast milk in the beginning and we didn't see a difference with that either. Has anyone found anything that works? TIA

Re: Clogged tear duct

  • My LO had one early on and I put breast milk on it... I was really skeptical but it cleared up after applying it a few times. Not sure if it was coincidence or if it worked.

  • Same here. Our doc said he would give it til she was a year to open up. If it's not we will be referred for the treatment. It's a minor procedure from what I've been told. Still not looking forward to it!!

I had read it was recommended to wait until one year also. It has gotten better than it was, but it's still pretty bad.

My DD was born with both eyes having plugged ducts. I was able to work one of them out by rubbing breastmilk it in. The other was super stubborn. I was rubbing it the way our pediatrician told us to rub it which was to start in the corner of the eye (next to her nose) up high and rub down. They told me to do it with my pinky finder for 10 seconds. I would do this every morning with no luck!
Then my husband read something online that a woman had a 10 month old with a plugged duct (since birth) and tried rubbing it starting from the other direction and it worked. I tried it and it actually worked!
This is what you do. Wash your thumb really well. Starting in the far corner of the eye (not the corner next to the eye, but the one closest to her temple). Take your thumb and apply pressure rubbing from the outside corner, under the eye, over and up to the inside corner. Do a couple of swipes 3 times a day.
    I hope that made sense.
We did this and it cleared up in 3-4 days. We had been trying the other method for 5 months with no success so I know this is what made it clear up.

Era: also, wet your thumb with warm water before you swipe. That'll help keep the motion fluid/smooth and I guess the water helps break things up.

Thanks! I will give it a try!

  • My twins both had clogged ducts in both eyes.  First my son's cleared up, then my daughter's left eye cleared up.  Her right eye is still clogged.  My pedi said not to worry about it at all.  She will wait til 14 months or longer to look at the procedure to fix it and even if it gets that far, it's not a bad procedure.

  • My first had a plug eye duct when she was born it never went away we tried everything to fix it! so we ended up scheduling with a surgon to fix it when she was 14 months old. Our surgery date was 6 weeks out and by the time the surgery date arrived it completly disappeared overnight! So unless it's bothering the child or getting infected i think it's ok to wait a bit.

Did you notice the eye getting better right away? We have been trying this and her eye is watering a lot during the day. That's never happened. I guess it's better than the green stuff but I'm wondering if it's related.
  • We had the same problem. LO had plugged ducts on both sides. One cleared up with massage pretty easily, and the other wouldn't clear no matter what. Our pedi just gave us the opthalmologist info and told us to give it a few more weeks. I forgot all about it until last week when I noticed his eye was all clear. I guess some just need time to clear on their own!

  • @OliveOyl2014‌ I think I noticed that something was different so that's why I stuck with it.
Make sure to apply pressure (as much as you're comfortable with! - I know this is your baby we're talking about). But it needs to be enough to break through what is blocking the duct. Don't lift your thumb. Keep it gliding as you press down.
I hope this works for you ladies.
  • @OliveOyl2014‌ and @NoLaLinz‌ have you had any luck with this?
  • @Amsull324‌ not yet. Just a lot of eye watering.

    Bummer :(
