Thanksgiving Recipe Exchange?

Would anyone be interested in having a thread to exchange ideas and recipes for Thanksgiving?

I am going to have to shake some things up this year, since we found out my husband is gluten intolerant, and it's always fun to see what other people do. I think we did something similar last year, but I thought it might be fun to do it again.

  • I'm going to Thanksgiving with DH's family and the people hosting are vegan. I'm not excited. I'm making our own Thanksgiving dinner the day after.

  • I'm thinking of making a pumpkin pie. I have never made any type of pie in my life. Someone please tell me it's easy!  Recipe hunt begins.

I'm definitely in. @acethebase‌ that sounds delicious. I may have to give that a trial run this week. Do you put any seasoning in the egg yolk?

Nope, maybe just a little bit of salt afterwards but taste it before you do. It's delicious!!!!! And let me know what you think :)
  • I'm in! I love thanksgiving food. Yum yum! ;)
  • I'm in too! I usually cook the entire dinner.

@DanceM‌ pumpkin pie is easy especially if you buy pre-made crust
  • I like to use half butter and half shortening in my pie crust, and replace about 1/3 of the flour with potato flour. Super flaky and tender! Just keep handling to a minimum.
  • We have 4 Thanksgiving dinners to go to. 1 the Sunday before, my moms family uses this as an excuse to have a family reunion. Then all 3 of our parents the day of.
  • @DanceM here is my pumpkin pie recipe. I have made my own crust, or just used pre-made uncooked dough and both work great.

    1 small can pumpkin
    1/2 tsp salt
    2 eggs (2 pies, use 5)
    2/3 c brown sugar
    2 Tbs white sugar
    2 tsp pumpkin spice
    1 can evaporated milk

Mix all together with whisk, pour into uncooked pie crust that has been pierced with a fork a few times. Cook 375* for 1 hr on bottom rack (or until toothpick comes out clean).

I have done the butter/shortening - I have never used potato flour though! Where do you buy that? I'm not sure I've ever seen it before.

I am a vegetarian, so I would love to go to a vegan Thanksgiving!  But I would never expect to host a vegetarian/vegan Thanksgiving.  Pick any other day to host a vegan meal but not Thanksgiving, unless all your friends and family are vegan.

Oh and it is so worth it to make your own pie dough.  I have a great blueberry pie recipe if anyone is interrested.

I've found it at Von's (our Safeway). It's in a blue box, and it might be called potato starch.

I love potato flour as a thickener in sauces, too. It's kind of a best of both worlds between flour and corn starch, IMO.
  • Here is my sweet potato recipe.

I make it ahead of time @crunchymama11‌

Whipped Sweet Potatoes with Brown Sugar-Pecan Topping

    For sweet potatoes
22 ounces red-skinned sweet potatoes (yams; about 2 large), peeled, cut into 1-inch pieces
6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
    1 large egg
    6 tablespoons sugar
    1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
    Pinch of salt

    For topping
    1 1/2 cups cornflakes, crushed
    1/2 cup (packed) brown sugar
    1/2 cup chopped pecans
6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) unsalted butter, melted
    Make sweet potatoes:
Preheat oven to 400°F. Cook sweet potatoes in large pot of boiling water until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain; transfer potatoes to large bowl and add butter. Using electric mixer, beat until smooth. Add egg, sugar, spice and salt; beat to blend. Transfer mixture to 8 x 8-inch baking dish. Bake potatoes until beginning to brown around edges and slightly puffed, about 25 minutes.

    Meanwhile, prepare topping:
Mix together all ingredients in medium bowl.

Spoon topping evenly over potatoes. Bake until golden brown and crisp, about 10 minutes longer.

    Prepare a day ahead:
Prepare as directed but use the dish from your crockpot slow cooker. Refrigerate over night. Warm on LOW setting for approx. 2 hours before serving.
  • Love this! It's my favorite meal of the year.

Right? Supposedly someone is bringing a turkey but I'm not convinced.

I eat vegetarian and vegan a lot but not on Thanksgiving.

I think I may bring apple, sausage stuffing. I need meat on Thanksgiving!

I didn't get online yesterday, so I just saw this. Thank you for the recipe! I'm sure it wil be great!

  • Ok I am in search of a gluten free recipe for stuffing. Which I know sounds a little crazy, but does anyone know of any made with corn bread that is good?
