September 2012 Moms

Am I wrong?

Trying to decide if I made the right call or crossed the line to be 'that mom'.

DD1 is in swimming lessons the requirement to move up is an assisted back float for 5sec and submerging for 5 sec. DD can do both these things, but was very squirmy today during her 10 second evaluation with a teacher she's never seen. The regular teacher was not the one who decided what her placement would be for the next session, it was the stranger. After class I asked the front desk what the requirements for the next class are and if we can have someone reevaluate DD. These classes are 15 weeks so I worry that if she is in the wrong level she's going to get really bored with the skills. We have 6 weeks left in the current session.

What say you S12?

For the record I think what I did was okay and DH agrees that asking was the right thing to do, neither of us are going to put up a fight if they want her to stay in the same level and in the grand scheme I don't think it's a huge deal, but I do think it is hard for a two year old to be calm and trust a total stranger in the water.

Re: Am I wrong?

  • I would 100% ask. If my 2 year old had to do an evaluation with a stranger it would not go well. Guaranteed.

  • I don't think you did anything wrong at all. L barely lets the Little Gym instructor touch her and she has been with her for 6+ months. Stranger evals would not go over well.

    Kid #1 - 09/03/12
    Kid #2 - maybe???
    Diagnosed with Severe Ashermans
Hysteroscopy #10 - scar tissue grew back reblocking my right tube
#11 or IVF with scarring still inside?

  • Yeah, 2 year olds are not known for their flexibility when it comes to new things/people. They really shouldn't have a stranger evaluate any of the kids.

  • Thank you for your opinions, I got in the car to drive home and started thinking that maybe I crossed the line into helicopter parent by objecting to my two year olds level assessment. I'm glad to know I'm not crazy/alone.

  • Registration for the next session starts on Wednesday, so unfortunately this is final placement for next session. It is earlier in the session because of holidays and the pool being closed for a week.

  • Sorry I can't give any good advice - I'm not sure what I would do.  Just reading what your DD can do makes me realize I need to get mine into lessons.
