WM's - does your DCP drive your LO anywhere?

I have a bit of a dilemma and I am wondering what other people do. DD goes to a friend's house while I work. She is sort of a nanny in that she does not take on any other kids but she does have two school aged boys and she takes LO with them to
go to the bus stop.

It is not far at all from their house and on very cold or rainy days she would normally drive her boys to the stop and wait for the bus. Would you be okay with your sitter in this situation strapping the infant seat into the car without the base (which is an option for this seat) to drive your LO to the bus stop? Or would you only want her putting your LO in the car if she had a properly installed base in the car?

What about if she had to go get one of her sons from school or one of them had an appointment? Would you be okay with her just putting the seat in as needed or would you want the installed base to be in the car?

ETA: or would you not want your DCP driving your LO at all? (Forgot to put that as an option)

  • And I think if you have a DCP under those circumstances (friend who is a SAHM) then you should assume they will need to run the occasional errand with your child. As long as they let me know they would be going someplace that day I would be okay with it.
  • Our car seat has directions for proper installation without the base right on the side of it, so I wouldn't take issue with that aspect of it. I would have to trust them as a responsible driver and make sure that the seat is absolutely installed properly. My stepmother in law is a terrible driver and has been in many accidents, so we don't have her babysit unless my fil will be home, as he does the driving when he is home.

  • We're not using the bases at all this time around. They're just for convenience anyway.
Our DCP drives our baby sometimes, either running errands or taking the older kids to school. I don't think twice about it.

  • My mom watches LO 3 days a week, and she does not have a base for her car. She just straps her seat in with the seatbelt and runs errands. She watches her for free, so I can't complain too much about her running errands. I trust her to properly secure her and to take good care of her

  • My MIL keeps chase when we go to work (SO is currently staying at home but will be back soon) I bought her a base for her car. It was like $35 ish? I think not expensive at all and makes me feel better for his safety.
  • Thanks everyone for the input. We do have an extra base but since driving LO will be the exception, rather than a regular thing, she is hesitant to tie up half of her back seat with the base as she has two kids of her own.

There are instructions right on the seat for installing without the base, I read the manual and it is one of the options for installation and does not at all suggest one of the methods is better.

I am ok with her putting the seat in as needed. My DH feels she should have the base installed. That was he reason for the question. I do realize that at some point relatively soon we will need to go to a convertible seat and I will need to purchase one to have at her house.

I want her to have a seat regardless in case there were an emergency as I am about 45+ minutes away.

  • My dcp does not drive LO but that's because she is an in-home provider and has 5-6 kids. In your situation I would not mind. Also, the car seat base is just for convenience, it's totally fine to just buckle it in. Just show he how to do it so you know she is doing it properly.

  • DD's babysitters (MIL, mom, sister, cousin) all take her in their cars occasionally. I never leave them a base. My carseat has instructions on it on how to properly fasten the seat without a base, and I trust them to do it right.

  • We dont use the base either and yes Eden's dcp drives her places sometimes. She always lets me know beforehand so I can leave her the seat because I'm not comfortable with her being in the spare infant seat. They never go far. Its usually just to bring her own child to or from school. Nbd in my opinion.

  • I had to install our car seat without the base in a rental car while traveling and i was so nervous it was going to be difficult but it's really not that hard. You just have to make sure the seatbelt is very tight and the seat is level. I watched YouTube videos to help me figure it out. You just can't be in too much of a hurry and make sure everything is correct before you take off.

  • My mom watched DS for almost 2 years, and I bought a spare base for her car.

If your friend doesn't mind having the base in her car, I would do that just b/c it eliminates a lot of error. But if it is a problem for her then I would probably let her drive short distances with just strapping the car seat in.
