Pregnant after 35

What are you craving that you can't have?

I want a cup of coffee, but it makes my heartburn too bad.

And would someone please give me a fruity alcoholic beverage? A mai tai would really hit the spot right now.

Re: What are you craving that you can't have?

  • Cawfeeee!!  I could use a cup or several, but am avoiding by choice.  I'm gonna have to make do with the occasional decaf.  I miss tea too.  All the herbal ones that are safe that I've tried make me feel off.
  • I drink coffee for the taste and don't care a hill of beans about regular vs decaf. I'd have no problem switching to decaf at the drop of a hat. But it's not the caffeine right now. It's the acidity! I'm off of it until my tummy feels better. :-(

  • Lots of wine and now that it's like a killion degrees outside lots of ice cold BEER! I don't give up coffee or lunchmeat while pregnant so I'm covering those craving.
But with alcohol, stealing sips from my hubby is not cutting it anymore. I want my own icey pint. Ughh... Didn't have nowhere near so many craving last time around.
  • A cold, slushy margarita! And alcohol any time we are at a fun summer event outside and everyone else is drinking and I'm having yet another Sprite.

  • Sushi, chevre, a lunch meat sandwich (like turkey or ham), poached eggs (or any eggs with a soft yolk), cookie dough- I could go on and on!

I also have been strangely interested in all kinds of tasty sounding drink recipes that I see on Pinterest.  The funny part is that I don't drink very often and when I do, I usually have a glass of wine.

  • @MsMacual - I am the same way with alcohol! I'm not a big drinker, and I usuall go for wine. But all these fruity concoctions on Pinterest look fabulous right now.

Diet Coke!   I gave up artificial sugar at the beginning of the year and didn't miss it all that much until I became pregnant, now I think about it all the time!!!

  • I really want coffee too!!! I love the stuff! Hot or cold! Most of the time I drink decaf because I get to jacked up on the regular. Because I can not drink just one cup! Lol! I can not eat or drink anything lately without feeling crappy. Oh would also like a chili cheese dog!

  • I would like to have sushi and red wine, but I'm not craving them at this point.  I miss really good coffee for the flavor (I'm hoping my puerto rican coffee makes it in the freezer until I can have it), but I miss it more for its...uhhhhh...bonus side effects.

My midwife told me I could eat deli meats if they were heated up first.  I buy meats that are sliced on request, at places I trust, so there's minimal contact for listeria.  I mostly stay away from things like salami or whatnot...unless I forget, which I just now realized I apparently did last night because we had people over and pizza (this is a rare thing for us), but it was heated so listeria was probably not a big concern.  Hopefully the baby won't be born with a third arm, but if so - their chore list just got longer...
  • I don't give up a lot of things (most cheeses in the US are pasteurized, for example and my doc says eggs are fine even runny yolks - we live in the country!) BUT I can't wait to have a martini again.  Right now, alcohol makes me feel sick at the thought of drinking it - but waiting another year + for a martini is very sad :(

Also - SUSHI AND SAKE!  I'm going to a hibachi restaurant in a couple weeks and so sad I can't drink my weight in sake and asahi beer as usual!!

  • Ahi tuna, margaritas and champagne! :(
  • sushi, ahi poke, wine, beer

  • I never thought I would miss deli turkey, but here I am! Pathetically, I've resorted to microwaving some a couple of times but it ruins it completely. A turkey mayo sandwich may need to happen at some point soon... At the very least, Thanksgiving leftovers here I come!

  • ok so I'm seeing people are missing deli meats.....i didn't know that was a no-no. oops!

  • It is but you can microwave it for 5-7 secs to kill any bacteria that it may have. I actually eat it almost every morning with my whole grain waffle as part of my diet with GD. My GD specialist said that it was ok as long as you microwave it.

But it's just NOT THE SAME if you microwave it.  :((

Besides, it wouldn't even get warm in my microwave after 5-7 seconds... It would have to be 30 seconds to really kill the bacteria, i.e. it has to get steaming hot.

I have wondered if freezing would be a better option for preserving the deli taste while also eliminating bacteria.
  • I'd still give my left arm for some orange juice right now.

  • @KirstenAlecia no more raw cookie dough for you, young lady! (But you're most likely fine having had it once and in a small amount.)
  • I'm not sitting around guzzling diet pop and beer and eating tons of cold lunch meat and mercury filled fish or anything.. but I have not been awesome about being 'good'. lol   I haven't had anything in large quantities and I try to make sure that I'm being healthy but man cravings are REALLY hard to resist.  Mostly, I've just been eating things that are not healthy in general.. not necessarily against any pregnancy rules.  I've been eating out WAY too much. Quite honestly, when my work day is over I am exhausted and nauseous and I just can't even think about trying to cook. Last night it was chinese.  Sunday night it was pizza.  lol  We did cook on Saturday and I plan on cooking tonight and the rest of the week.  I swear nausea hits me really hard about 3pm every day.  I feel like total hell until I go to bed and sometimes I am totally worthless!

However, raw cookie dough sounds delightful! lol

  • I've been craving OJ too, and I can't have it either! Mine is because of bad heartburn. But sometimes I drink it anyway. It tastes so good going down, then later I feel like I drank gasoline or something.

  • A bath!

I had no idea that it was no-no during pregnancy and I had totally planned on being PG as an excuse to spend lots of time soaking in the tub.
