Heartburn is a bitch

With my daughter, I didn't get bad heartburn until near the end (maybe 36 weeks and I went to 40). With these twins it hit hard at 16 weeks. 6 a.m. and I'm wide awake with a chest cavity that feels like they're taking a flamethrower to it from the inside. Ugh.

I just keep saying, "They'll probably both have full heads of hair." as consolation. But seriously, fuck heartburn.

Re: Heartburn is a bitch

  • I'm having major heartburn too. I can't go anywhere without my tums.
  • Loading the player...
  • I agree with your 'fuck heartburn' sentiment. I should buy stock in Tums.

  • I've had awful heartburn since day one. It's how I knew it was time to piss on a stick or two. I keep Pepcid and Tums by my side at all times. Heartburn can kiss my ass.

  • Same boat here! With DS I was well past 30 weeks when it showed up. I wasn't expecting it this early or this bad :((

  • Pineapple helps me. Also lots of small meals/snacks. If I get too hungry, heartburn will rage on all day.
  • Mine is at the point that water can incite a case of it, and tums rarely helps. Still popping them like candy. My nearly 3 year old has started just bringing me the bottle throughout the day.

And yeah, it's true that it correlates to more hair (they did a study here at Johns Hopkins). By the last ultrasound of my daughter you could actually see it on the ultrasound.
  • I learned a valuable lesson the other day. When having heartburn do not drink ice water. I was out of tums, and was thirsty. The two combined into a fire and ice battle of cold burning pain. Fuck heartburn.
  • I remember when I was pregnant with my son I carried TUMS around like it was a bad habit! It went everywhere with me.

  • Yupp have heartburn every night. Tonight is the worst almost feels like a freaking heart attack.

For the record. NEVER buy target brand tums. GROSS! Walmart brand isn't too bad but targets are just awful. You've been warned.
  • Ugh. So sad ! I've had it since day one and tums doesn't work at all. I take Zantac 75 mg and that seems to help. A glass of milk saved me the other night while I was waiting for the meds to kick in.

Literally anything I eat will cause it :(
  • I had it really bad with DD and sure enough, she had so much hair, they could see it on my ultrasounds. This time, it's just started up, so at my last appointment the midwife called in Protonix for me. GAMECHANGER! Immediate relief!

  • I can barely eat, but even water gives me heartburn these days. I've just switched from Zantac to Prilosec and I'm hoping it gives me some relief.
  • Mine has been horrible! I drink water with a spoonful of baking soda mixed in and it works wonders!

  • Chewing gum works great for me, by chewing gum you create more saliva & it neutralizes your acid.
  • I have had horrible heartburn and reflux with each of my pregnancies. Zantac is my best friend. During 3rd tri I have to be sure to take it every 12 hours or I will end up taking it at 3 pm and then waking up at 3 am with horrible heartburn. The Zantac doesn't really help with the reflux though. With my second pregnancy I would wake up in the middle of the night with my stomach contents spewing out my nose, that was super fun... NOT!
  • Okay, after we all have our babies, we need compare baby heads. Hairy, or bald? :) I haven't had a touch of heartburn (not to rub it in, ladies!!! I've had other symptoms, promise!) so I assume my baby will be bald as a bowling ball, but I'm curious how that theory works out in real life. They say it's a legitimate association, something to do with more elevated estrogen levels being associated with both heartburn and hairy headed babies.

I have heartburn all the time, like right now. It comes and goes. Some days is worse then others. Hopefully this baby has a full head of hair but I don't know we'll see!

    Edit: spelling
  • I've been having heartburn since about week 6 or 7(I am now 18 + 3) and it is just getting worse!! And I am getting seriously twitchy with the number of people telling me it will have hair!! Heartburn and hormones are a heady combination!! I ❤️ Gaviscon!
  • I too had vicious heartburn and my daughter was a baldy. She didn't have enough for a ponytail until she was 3 (and it consisted of about 20 hairs). She's got a lot now at 6 though. She's that little girl who looks like her mom never has time to comb her hair because three seconds later it's always a rats' nest. I miss the bald days.

Bad heartburn/hiccups/burps with these babies, too. I am a big fan of my zantac.
  • I was having pretty bad heartburn and my midwife told me to try taking a shot of apple cider vinegar. It makes me gag for a second but it actually does calm my stomach right down. Or maybe it's just in my head.

  • I had heart burn bad with DS around the 28 week mark. This time it started at 14 weeks. DS had a head full of thick nice hair. Fingers crossed this is the same

The nerd in me was wondering the same thing.

And yes... The heartburn sucks, but have found that if I avoid tomatoes (haven't found tums yet) it's so much more tolerable. But trying to explain how it feels to him (who's apparently never had HB...wtf?!?) is just ridiculous.

  • Heartburn from hell! Gaviscon is my life saver! Try it out :)
  • I spoke to my doctor today about the heartburn and she recommended switching from tums to Nexium or Zantac. She said they are stronger. I hope that helps someone struggling who is currently on Tums.
  • In my early 20's I had issues with heartburn that affected my ability to breathe. I was actually misdiagnosed at the time with asthma, but an ent caught and corrected the problem with high doses of omeprazole. With this pregnancy, the heartburn came back with a vengeance.....worse at night. Unfortunately I can't take omeprazole, but my doc (ob) prescribed Nexium at 40 mgs and I am supplementing with tums when needed. Seems to be doing the trick.

Anyways long story short, other ways to help heartburn... Sleep with your head and shoulders elevated, nose strips help if it is causing breathing problems, google what not to eat (there is a whole slew of items), keep meals small, and try not to eat or drink before bed.

    Hope this helps!
  • Huh wonder if that's what I was experiencing last night. I was having really bad upper abdominal pain for almost 3 hours and felt super distended. Was thinking it was either heartburn or acid reflux. My upper abdomen killed anytime I would move or push into it

After the night I had last night...I'm going to the store to these asap.  ugh...

  • OK, everyone, listen up! Don't live with heartburn! Take Zantac. I get the Walmart Equate version and it's WAY cheaper, and I take one a day and it eliminates my heartburn. It works for 24 hours. During one of my pregnancies, heartburn was so bad that I had to take 2 a day (it says on the label you can take up to 2 a day). You may want to ask your doctor first, but mine says it's fine. It's so much better than chewing Tums all day long. I have not found any natural remedies that work. This is my 4th pregnancy, and I've taken Zantac with all of them, and I have 3 very healthy boys.

  • @DMarieSchneider‌ That was my understanding when she switched me to Nexium, but I would definitely call your doc beforehand to ask what he/she recommends. After all my specialty is computers:) Lol!
  • Zantac did trick! I slept great, no regurg. *relief* @miracle4x‌ what time of day do you take yours?

I pretty much take it whenever I feel heartburn coming on, which seems to get earlier every day. I don't think it matters since it works for a long time. I'm so glad it worked for you!!
